BigSound is Brisbane’s annual music industry festival with artist’s, punters and industry professionals all brought together around several Fortitude Valley venues to celebrate music. People in the music industry from all over the country fly out to Brisbane especially for this 3-day event and AMNplify got the chance to interview MUTO a Sydney based EDM producer about his BigSound experience, plans for the future and being best mates with FLUME!

He recently released his single Say Nothing and will be touring Europe to support ODESZA right after he wraps up BigSound – MUTO shows no signs of slowing down and his new track is god damn catchy!

How’s your BigSound going so far?

Yeah, good. Running around the place doing bits and pieces. Interviews, lots of promo stuff. It’s been fun.

And, you are performing your first BigSound set tonight?

Yeah, I do. Slightly nervous but feeling good. I think I will always have a few nerves especially with something like this where it is a music industry event where there will be a lot of industry people going “Hmmm..”

I’ve heard your live shows are something not to miss, so I’m sure it will be great.

Yeah well, I’ve got two shows so I’m hoping that if I fuck this one up I’ll just redeem myself tomorrow haha!

Haha, that’s an awesome way to look at it. Have you been and checked out the venue for your sets over at Oh Hello?

I went and checked out the space and I’m not exactly thrilled, to be honest. Normally I’ve got a visual component to my sets, I like to have strobes etc. and Oh Hello! only has one static light. Especially when it’s just me on stage I don’t have a band to break up the dynamics, so I’m thinking of just getting my mates to just show up and take lots of photos to make a strobe haha. I mean it is what it is though, it’s more about the music than anything else but next year I hope to get to play at the TBC club. It is cool they’ve decked Oh Hello! out in completely green and I’m so happy to be here supporting Triple J Unearthed.

How are you liking BigSound so far?

It’s been fun so far. Obviously, I haven’t gotten into the work side of things yet, but today I’ve just been doing loads of promo stuff and having a beer here and there and talking to people. It’s good because you know, I was walking through Fortitude Valley last night and walked past so many venues with live music playing and that’s really cool. Everyone taking part is into music, playing music or working in the music industry and they’re my kind of people! It’s good to see and as an artist, the whole showcase timetable is like a show on turbo speed like in-and-out, no sound check, next person. The punters are fast too, it’s like they are there watching a set one minute and then the whole crowd moves onto the next venue haha!

I guess some of the venues are so far apart people have to hike it between each act, it definitely is a different experience to the typical music festival format.

Yeah, so weird and this is my first BigSound experience EVER and it’s just great. Hopefully, I’ll get the chance to come back next year!

I’m sure I’ll be seeing you again next year. I’ve actually read a few reviews comparing you to Australian music producer Flume. What’s your take on that?

I think Flume’s an easy one just because he’s killing it. I don’t really want to put myself anywhere close to him because he’s obviously breaking boundaries left, right and centre. He is a very close friend of mine though, I’ve known him since I was five years old and I mean he was the one who got me interested in it all in the first place. He gave me all the tricks of the trade, gave me Ableton to start out, so I owe a lot of my early stuff to him. He’s been a massive role model and a big help in general, he gave the tools to do what I do but I’ve developed my own sound.

You’ve got a repertoire of original music building now, I’ve been listening to your new track Say Nothing on repeat – I love it!

Aw, cheers dude. It was a great collaboration to be apart of, it came out really well. I’m happy with it and it’s been received really well.

Will your set tonight be mostly original tracks?

All of my own music. I might play maybe a remix, but with the time constraints, I don’t know. I’ll be playing some original unreleased stuff from my forthcoming EP due out in October.

So I guess October will be mostly promo for the new EP for you then?

Yep, don’t remind me. I don’t want BigSound to end, haha! No, but I’m excited because I want to keep releasing as much new music possible and keep the momentum going.

Moving forward in your career do you still see yourself doing your Sydney DJ sets?

For me collaborating with artists will always be important but with djing that was never going to be my main gig. I like doing it and it will always be one of my hobbies but not my career focus. I will be going over to Europe with ODESZA to support them on tour, and then the EPs coming out and then I just want to keep writing and busting out tunes – keep the ball rolling.

What is your bucket list Australian music festival to perform?

Splendour In The Grass. That would be amazing hopefully, next year. It’s always a bucket list festival that one for every Aussie artist.

What artist’s are you going to try and see at BigSound if you have time?

Thandi Phoenix is on my roster, she puts on a great show. I want to catch Golden Vessels as well.

Have you always wanted to have a career in music?

I never really knew at an early age but music was always a big part of my life because my dad is a producer and music’s always been in my family. I think it was always a possibility but then when I got to around seventeen I was one of those teenagers like “Fuck this, I wanna party!” and then when that got boring I eventually went “You know what, I want to focus on creating music.” and that was an easy transition.
