As 2017 draws to an end, the summer festival season kicks off and Christmas trees begin their ascent, monthly music series Red Bull Sound Select prepares for the biggest shows of the year, as December’s Christmas instalments arrive in Sydney and Melbourne.
On Friday, December 15, the program will return to the burrows of Sydney’s east, where acclaimed Sydney producer Basenji, indie-pop gun Mallrat, fast-rising collective Haiku Hands, and afro-futuristic wordsmith Genesis Owusu will close out the year with a Christmas bash at the beloved Beach Road Hotel, curated by FBi Radio. The following week on Thursday December 21, Chapter Music will host a mystical festive line-up at Melbourne’s Northcote Social Club, headed by local synth-punk band NUN. Joining them will be Chapter Music signee Jonny Telafone, eponymous solo artist V and emerging synth duo, Honey.
Red Bull Sound Select Sydney
Red Bull Sound Select returns to Sydney for its annual Christmas edition curated by FBi Radio’s Amelia Jenner. Once again, Bondi’s iconic Beach Road Hotel will swarm with holiday celebration as a very special line-up takes to the stage.
Sydney-based electronic all-star Basenji will lead a fierce line-up of local acts, with his leftfield production and infectious pop sound. His recent single “Mistakes” (featuring powerhouse vocalist Tkay Maidza) exploded onto the airwaves this past month and is already one of the most played songs on triple j, dubbed as “one of the best tracks of 2017” (InTheMix).
Warming up the stage will see melodic dream girl Mallrat, who at just 18 years old, has won over a worldwide audience with her unique blend of nostalgic tropical pop, darkly skewed rapping and blissful melancholy. All-girl dance crew Haiku Hands will also be performing on the night – their fearless spirit, artistic flair and irreplaceable energy has positioned them as line-up favourites this year, quickly flooding the summer festival circuit. Opening the night will see Ghanaian-Australian wunderkind Genesis Owusu grace the stage, bringing with him his obscure and wonderful blend of vicious rap and and harmonic croons.
Red Bull Sound Select Melbourne
The following week, Red Bull Sound Select looks to Christmas occult and supernatural influences with curators Chapter Music founders Ben O’Connor and Guy Blackman handpicking an ebullient line-up, sure to make for a spine-chilling night – taking place at Melbourne’s Northcote Social Club.
Synth-punk band NUN will headline the December proceedings, bringing with them their dark, thudding, sci-fi-influenced sound, one that’s been redefining synth music since their early inception in 2011. Lead by vocalist Jenny Branagan, their critically-acclaimed, debut self-titled LP brought to life the band’s vibrant vision of electronic pop, employing the weight of gnarling bass lines and shimmering analogue synths, with Branagan’s vocal oozing 80s, detached pop-goth yearnings.
Jonny Telafone hails from Canberra-via-Melbourne, sporting a highly original genre best described as post-apocalyptic R&B. His debut album, 2015’s Romeo Must Cry saw him collaborate with LA rapper Bones (A$AP Rocky), The Ocean Party, TV Colours, Danger Beats and more. The multi-talented auteur has also shared stages with Kirin J Callinan and Client Liaison.
Second opener of the night is multi-instrumentalist, composer and producer V, who after returning from a 10 year stint in Berlin, is Melbourne’s newest dark wave supernova. Joining her will be paranoid, synth duo Honey aka Rory Stenning and Luke Keanan-Brown, a new “Canberra fusion” act hailing from the ever-growing ACT music scene.
This year, we’ve witnessed Australia’s best breaking artists take the stage with some of the world’s biggest at Red Bull Sound Select’s monthly series, curated in turn with I OH YOU’s Johann Ponniah,Laneway Festival’s Travis Banko, Chapter Music and FBi Radio’s Amelia Jenner.
