New Zealand rockers Tablefox had a massive 2017, with a successful head-turning album You And I Will Find A Way which gained support from Australian Musician and The Music as well as a slew of fans from an Australian tour. After releasing the the hart hitting single “Under A Broken Smile” earlier this year, they’ve returned with an acoustic version that gives the song a whole new spin.
“This alternative re-imagining of the song came about while the band was preparing a new set in early 2018. The track is very emotionally powerful and when we previously had tried to replicate it live we realised it was missing some of that raw emotional power. Nothing seemed to work under the original recorded structure of the song, after hours and hours of hammering it out we basically decided to back the truck right up and started stripping back instruments. The eureka moment came when we arrived at just vocal and guitar, suddenly all that raw emotion started to click and we had a very special moment of departure in the set to work with. It started to sound so focused and powerful that we decided it simply had to be recorded again that way as a nod to the strong message of the song and what it means to the band.” – Matt Carson (Lead Guitar)

The recording of the original song was met with its fair share of roadblocks and loss as Clinton Bell (Vocals) explains, “During the recording process of these songs the band lost three family members and the impact of those events has definitely shaped the music. The latest single ‘Under a Broken Smile’ has the band member’s personal struggles, family tragedies, band break-ups intertwined into the music, it’s got it all.”

Tablefox’s 2017 album You And I Will Find A Way was recorded at Tsunami studios with head engineer Dave Trail. Built in an abandoned hospital turned studio, Tsunami studios helped draw out deeper emotions throughout the recording as Matt Carson (Lead Guitar) elaborates,“After each day we would retire to the accommodation which were old hospital rooms, things got very spooky at times- may have been the booze but our eyes really played some tricks on us! The most intense thing would have been the emotion of Chris’s mother passing away on the final day. The emotion involved there combined with the environment was a total game changer in terms of our expectations for this record.”
