Never one to do anything by the books, Estère shows us exactly what it means to be a uniquely creative and independent artist with the release of her thematically daring, self-produced double album MY DESIGN, ON OTHERS’ LIVES.
Showing distinct musical vision, both compositionally and lyrically, today’s release follows the arrival of (Part 1) MY DESIGN which came out October 2017. Now in the wake of opening for legendary icon Grace Jones and with a plan to take 2018 in her stride, playing at renowned Afropunk Festival Paris and touring both UK and EU, Estère gives us MY DESIGN, ON OTHERS’ LIVES.

MY DESIGN ON OTHERS’ LIVES was crafted in a suburban 40’s Wellington villa that Estère used to call ‘home’. The content of the lyrics avoids popular music’s occupation with topics such as love, heartbreak, loneliness…to venture into more imaginative realms. The flurries of eclectic sounds, sonic textures and musical instruments in Estère’s production, helps to weave stories from both the perspective of others’ lives and her own.
When the reverberant creak of first track “Vietnam” hits, right until the folk-like guitar picking/electronic bounce of the last song “Guilty”, weighty drums, warm acoustic textures, succulent bass over powerful melodies – manifest a unique euphoria that shows the inner workings of Estère’s thoughts and creative processes.
“I am really passionate about production and this album was partly an exercise in learning how to translate what I hear in my mind, to real compositions. It made me work really hard. Gun Kid is probably the best example of this, the entire song structure, the strange juxtaposition between violent electronic and soft acoustic, was in my head before I made the beat. I’m really fascinated by this cross-pollination of influence – and ideas. I think when people listen to it, they will hear so many elements and, it’s a bit of a weird body of work in that way. I’ve always wanted my musical progress to be transparent. I want people to tangibly hear how I’m learning and developing my own artistry, songwriting and production when they listen. I don’t want things to come off perfect and polished, because that is not who I am as a human or artist.”
– Estère
Estère takes listeners on a journey, exploring sonic soundscapes and contrasting primal with refined. With her obsessive interest in collecting and recording samples, original sonic samples can be found on every song off the album. The backdrop to “Vietnam” is the hiss and sway of Bamboo trees Estère recorded in Tam Coc (Vietnam), whilst the sound of her Mum’s vintage telephone punches the chorus in “Rent”. The 12-track, two-part album also features her much loved bangers including “Pro Bono Techno Zone”, “Control Freak”, her more personal, stripped down number “Grandmother”, and her most recent track “Nomads”.

“Control Freak” is a thunderous, rhythm-led track…Attitude not only matched by the punchy composition but also Estère’s own unflinching declarations that she “knows how to be cruel.”
– Rolling Stone
“From beginning to end, ‘Grandmother’ is a totally mesmerizing piece of gold, an earworm that’s welcome to stay from New Zealand’s Electric Blue Witch-Hop Producer, Estére.”
– Speaker TV, Track Of The Day
“Not only is Estère oozing with the gift of groove… put ‘Rent’ on and let Estere’s song and spirit get you moving.”
– Music Love
“Praise be to Estere, she has me covered. Control Freak bangs.”
