After much deliberation, triple j Unearthed is excited to reveal the finalists for the DMA’S remix competition!

Ranging from heaving electronic bangers to spoken word poetry, piano ballads and much more, Australian producers, beatmakers, rappers and vocalists have flipped ‘The End’ by DMA’S in every way imaginable. Every entry was a totally different journey, and we were so impressed.

“Remixing a beloved Australian act like DMA’S was certainly a challenge but the Unearthed community was well up for the task, showing up in droves with their own creative takes and reminding us once again of the enormous amount of Australian talent out there”, says triple j Unearthed Music Director Dave Ruby Howe.

Get around the finalists below…

Borderland State (Sunshine Coast, QLD)
From the sounds of it, Sunny Coast producer Borderland State stepped up the morphine for his DMA’S remix, turning ‘The End’ into a blissed out ambient dream. The producer describes his style as “music to fall asleep to” but tbh there’s no sleeping on this one.

DVNA (Gold Coast, QLD)
For someone who’s only been producing for a year or so, Gold Coast native DVNA is already a high achiever. Her remix locks into the groove created by DMA’s and their producer Kim Moyes but dials down the vibe for a woozy late night neo-R&B do-over, complete with her own vocals.

Tobiahs (Melbourne, VIC)
Young Melbourne producer Tobiahs makes the most of DMA’S Tommy O’Dell’s million-dollar voice, isolating the original vocals to create a yearning six-minute club track. It’s a revelatory journey through euphoria and angst akin to RÜFÜS DU SOL’s ‘Innerbloom’.

MILKBEACH (Adelaide, SA)
Taking cues from inspirations new and old like Peking Duk and Justice, Adelaide solo artist MILKBEACH flicks the switch on ‘The End’, adding talk box and crowd harmonies for a buzzing reinvention.

RUER (Perth, WA)
Perth producer/vocalist RUER took bold initiative with her DMA’S remix and turned ‘The End’ into a startling duet. As well as remaking the track with her own glossy production, RUER adds new lyrics creating a new twist to ‘The End’.

.

The winner will be chosen by DMA’S themselves, with the winner scoring a double pass to one of DMA’S Australian shows, as well as a production masterclass from none other than The Presets’ Kim Moyes.

Tune in to triple j Drive on Mon 29 October as Veronica & Lewis announce the winner.
