After returning with a pair of critically acclaimed singles, Sydney-based indie-rock quartet CREO have announced tour dates and delivered their sophomore EP ‘In The Red’ – engineered and produced by long-time collaborator Nathan Sheehy (Dune Rats, Birds of Tokyo, Kim Churchill).

‘In The Red’ is six songs of brooding, eclectic and thought-provoking indie-rock. It ranges from the slow burning opening cut ‘Sentenced To Ten’, to the soaring stadium-rock of the title track, and the infectious scream-driven sing-a-longs of ‘Plasticine Mezzanine’. The final result shines a light on the group’s ability to continually push the envelope with their deft approach to song writing.

Front man Jorjee Haman on the creative and production inspiration on ‘In The Red’: “The concept of the new record is about all the individual hardships of last year. We poured a lot of energy into our debut EP, and you could say we worked hard but not necessarily smart, which in turn had various effects on the morale and mental health of each of us. It felt like we were in this horrible emotional debt to our hopes and dreams for success, hence the title, ‘In the Red’. Things got really stale in regards to the way we worked, created and the environment we based ourselves – the overall productivity of the band had started to become a chore.

When we started planning the new record we made a conscious effort to change our approach to everything and in turn, it breathed new life into us. We didn’t play any of these songs live as a band till it was time to record, everything was written, demoed, and pre-produced on the fly, in my apartment. It was a completely new approach for us and it seemed to work better than our original – jam ideas, build on them at home, rinse and repeat – ethos”.

Both lead singles ‘In The Red’ and ‘Plasticine Mezzanine’ were warmly received by the likes of triple j, triple j Unearthed, community radio, Spotify and worldwide tastemakers Indie Obsessive(USA), buffaBLOG (USA), The Revue (CAN), Dansende Beren (BEL), ParaPOP (IDN) and Pilerats(AUS).

Haman adds: “I really feel like this is the best we’ve ever sounded on a record, and a huge part of that comes down to the overall positive headspace of the band when we were laying shit down. Although the last record was great, it was recorded in a stressful environment, with various setbacks and difficulties, and there was an essence of “wish we had done this or that differently” once it was all done and dusted.

I can proudly say, ‘In the Red’ is the first time I’ve sat back, listened to the masters and thought, “this is how I wanted it to sound.”

Following on from strongly attended shows in Sydney, Wollongong and Melbourne, the band will head out on the road again in November to perform in all three East Coast capitals.

In 2017, CREO carved out a reputation as one of the hardest working live bands in the country, by performing forty-two shows, which included Falls Festival, selling out their own headline shows and sharing stages alongside Nothing But Thieves (UK), Minus The Bear (USA), British India, Last Dinosaurs, Tired Lion, Polish Club and Bad//Dreems.

‘In The Red’ EP is available now Worldwide.
