The annual Songwriters’ Award Grand Final Concert was held last night at Northcote Town Hall, inviting the local community to witness performances from this year’s Songwriters’ Award finalists as they vied for the accolade (and the huge first prize package).

Finalists performed before a panel of distinguished local musicians including Sal Kimber, Charles Jenkins and Monica Weightman as part of the Darebin Music Feast. Although the competition was tight, proving yet again that Darebin is home to some of the most talented songwriters in the world, Stella Bridie’s original song ‘Don’t Go Out Tonight’ blew the judges away and was awarded the 2018 trophy.

The panel of judges described the song as being extremely powerful, and very current, with lyrics such as “girls in twos wear steel capped shoes” seeming to honour and mourn some of the tragic events out of Melbourne in recent times. Stella is an aspiring musician and songwriter who draws on her passion for culture and politics for creative inspiration. She performs with several other emerging Melbournian artists, pursues her own solo music, works part-time in the community sector, and frequently collaborates with organisations like HerPlace who work to tackle gender and discrimination, often appearing as a panelist and representative.

The Darebin Music Feast Songwriters’ Award is an annual songwriting competition that seeks to recognise, showcase and promote the talents of local songwriters. This year’s first prize included $2000 from APRA AMCOS, 8 hours recording at HeadGap studios, EP Mastering by Crystal Mastering, $500 Implant Media Voucher for CD duplication services, $500 Echo Tone Guitars voucher, 1 hour song writing workshop with Push Songsfacilitator Charles Jenkins and 2 x Conference Tickets thanks to The Push. This year, thanks to 3KND, GraceJean received a $500 Encouragement Award in recognition of their commendable effort on their original song ‘Too Close’.

Around 100 entries are received each year; this year’s finalists were Lisa Crawley, Teresa Duffy-Richards, Patrick Lionel, Stella Bridie, Jason Lowe, Tanya George, Paul McMillian, Julia De Matteis, Munro Melano and GraceJean.
