Being widely touted as ‘one to watch for 2019’ from the likes of YouTube, Cool Accidents and Pilerats, Yorke today has begun her year by dropping her second single and its accompanying video, ‘Wake The City’.
Co-written and produced by Andy Mak, the track is about disempowerment in a relationship and how often that begs the question of whether to sacrifice who you are or to appease your partner.

Yorke who recently signed to Island Records, says of working with Andy Mak, “We started chatting about the themes as we sat down at an old upright piano in the studio and the song just wrote itself. Sonically, I think the track is a big turning point for me, really cementing the Yorke sound. It ended up being one of the most vulnerable and exposed songs I’ve ever written, even though on first listen, it may appear hopeful.”
The themes of constraint and self-liberation in Wake The City are juxtaposed by the uplifting melody and production, continuing Yorke’s ability to craft a multilayered approach to her song-writing and production.
The video was directed by Charli Burrowes (MeOhMy) and filmed in various locations around Brisbane.
Beautifully shot Yorke says, “The song itself means so much to me that I wanted to create something really vulnerable and raw. The director, Charli worked closely with me to maintain the sincerity of the track through the beautiful cinematography and locations. I feel it really brought the song to life.”
Charli wanted the locations to feel a little ambiguous, even slightly New York-esque as the NYC has always been a huge influence on Grace.
She further explains, “My challenge was to create something that felt like a sincere nod to that. I really wanted the video to have a kind of voyeuristic feel to it, like when you happen across people out in the streets at night + catch some tiny unguarded moment of intimacy.”
Wake The City is the follow-up to Yorke’s debut single First Light which captivated and enthralled media on its release. With over 600k streams of First Light, the single was featured on Spotify’s New Music Friday, Chilled Afternoon, New Pop Sounds and Chill AF playlists. It was added to Apple’s Music’s Best Of The Week and Breaking Pop. Premiered on triple j’s Good Nights, First Light received a lot of love from Syn Radio, 4ZZZ and Radio Adelaide plus given the vote as MTV’s Upload Of The Week.
Yorke is the latest sonic exploration into the world of indie pop by Byron Bay’s 20-year-old Grace Hughes.
Having written music for over a decade and garnering a considerable buzz in her native Byron Bay and beyond, Yorke arrives with a sharper vision that’s blossomed into her most truthful songwriting to date.

AMNPLIFY – DB
My nickname is “The Amnplifier”. Why? Because around here my focus is on being a conduit for providing greater outcomes that people come here for. My day to day “work” is living in the moment, and I love helping others concentrate on finding their connection to themselves through their experiences.
Why start a music environment? The truth is I love music, I love writing, and I love life. I work with musicians every day, and I feel certain that I will be until they put me in the ground. I have been managing people in businesses of some sort for over thirty five years so along the way I have developed some “wisdom” from my regular and constant “observations”.
Amnplify your experience. That is what we want you to do here, and if you want to let me know why you do, or don’t, shoot me a message on Facebook.
Hope you enjoy yourself here and find something that hits you somewhere.
