Praise for ‘Vermillion’

“Cleverly crafted, with each track acting as an intricate part of the bigger picture…Her song writing is unapologetic and parades the simplicities of life as if each moment is magnificent.” – The AU Review

“It’s impossible not to be swept under Clea’s spell. Her new single ‘Dreaming’ washes over you from the first listen. The production and blend of synths and swelling vocals is great with this tune, making the final product a refreshing, tightly delivered, piece of dream-pop.” – triple j

“Dipping between jangly guitar numbers, string-laden ballads, and hooky pop tunes, it feels as if Vermillion is Clea’s way of introducing us to her world – all aspects of it.” – Life Without Andy

Following the release of her latest single, ‘Right Way’, Clea has gifted triple j listeners with her cover of Miley Cyrus and Mark Ronson’s ‘Nothing Breaks Like a Heart’ for this week’s Like A Version, alongside a live performance of her single ‘Dreaming’.

Clea’s Like A Version cover follows the head-turning release of her debut album ‘Vermillion’ in November of last year.

The performance is to be followed by the ‘Vermillion’ Album Tour, kicking off tonight in Adelaide, followed by shows across Sydney, Melbourne and Brisbane later this month. This weekend Clea will make an appearance at Wollongong’s Farmer & the Owl festival alongside the likes of USA acts Beach House, Snail Mail, Deafheaven, and Flint Eastwood.

Clea recorded ‘Vermillion’ together with her partner, musician/producer Alistar Richardson, in a hand-built recording studio perched over a lily-strewn dam in the Scenic Rim in Queensland.

“The process of recording the album together, without the burden of time constraints, allowed the songs to evolve, weave and turn. I’m so thankful for the collaborative ease and inspiration I share with Ali when it comes to making music.” Clea says,“We really challenged ourselves musically within this album, providing the perfect platform for my sentiments to take hold.”

The past six months have seen Clea tour with USA popstar King Princess and slot on Beyond The Valley’s lineup alongside the likes of The Kooks, Tash Sultana, Duke Dumont and Client Liaison. Clea also signed to New World Artists in late 2018, signaling that great things are to come from the Brisbane dream-pop artist.

More on Clea:

From a very young age, Clea has presented herself as the complete artisan. A vibrant young woman unimpeded by authoritative and conventional expectations, she continually strives for creative control and ownership in all aspects of her art; be it music, photography, film, fashion, graphic design, or art direction.

Clea’s passion for music and songwriting runs deep, taking center stage in her life over the past 3 years, and is by far the most significant avenue by which she makes her mark on the world around her.

A vegetarian, and a conscientious consumer with a passion for artisanal and pre-loved clothing, Clea is very enthusiastic about connecting, preserving and enriching the natural environment, which follows from her deep conviction that you reap what you sow. Musically, Clea is awash with resonant sounds, be it her velvet voice, the tremor of her acoustic guitar, or the melancholic swirl of the Mellotron.

At the core of Clea’s music is the melodic pull, each song drawing the listener in to a world of both discovery and recognition. For Clea, writing music usually starts with the guitar, the strummed melody revealing the sentiment.

Released Friday 23rd November, Clea’s debut album ‘Vermillion’ explores social conditioning and offers a realisation that we all have control over our lives; the trick being to relinquish control altogether.

A taste of ‘Vermillion’ came in the form of her single, ‘Dreaming’, which was not only met with positive feedback, but also added to high rotation on triple j, and sat at the station’s most played track for a number of weeks.

In addition to praise for her releases, Clea has created a name for herself with her live performance, jumping on board tours with Holy Holy, Alex the Astronaut, and King Princess. She also announced her signing to New World Artists booking agency in October.

Clea’s deep immersion in all aspects of the creative process has become second nature, leading her to co-direct, style, and edit the majority of her photoshoots and filmwork, as well as designing and producing promotional material, including posters, merchandise, and cover artwork.

Now emerging from Clea’s transition to adulthood, the now 22-year-old has dropped her debut album ‘Vermillion’ and will embark on a national album tour in support of the releaseThe album explores social conditioning and offers a realisation that we all have control over our lives; the trick being to relinquish control altogether.

Vermillion is the colour of fire, the transformation of unbridled energy, ashes holding knowledge of the fire, and a new version of itself. Vermillion is resilient, difficult, rich…words that encapsulate metamorphosis and transition.
