Little May have settled into their stardom, leaned more into alternative rock.” – Consequence of Sound

“‘Lover’ and ‘Apples’, ‘Blame My Body’ is a step up in terms of crispiness in production and sound.” – Life Without Andy

“They unpick the intricacies of love with such insight that you’ll either nod your head knowingly with a resigned shrug or blubber, quite a lot.”

As they march towards the release of their long-awaited new album, Blame My Body (out May 3 via Dew Process / Universal Music Australia), Australian indie rock duo Little May today release an exquisite new single, ‘As Loving Should.’

‘As Loving Should’ is in many ways the banner song of Blame My Body. Its composition is a contrast between beauty and brutal honesty. The music itself is velvety smooth, with a lush, rich warmth – acoustic strums, grizzly guitar leads, and vocals ripped straight from Stevie Nicks’s throat at the height of her Fleetwood Mac fame. However, its beauty masks confessional lyrics that find Little May vocalist Hannah Field opening up about her battle with alcohol dependence during a turbulent relationship.

“I chose the bottle over you so many times / No more empty promises this body is mine,” she declares at one of the more poignant moments during the second verse – a line emblematic of the duo’s quest to make a record as honest (sometimes painfully honest) and as true to their hearts as they could. It’s stark and it’s raw, but it’s stunning and real.

“We went into this record wanting to be bold & honest with ourselves, without shame,” the band recently said in a statement on their social media pages. “Both of us had very different experiences whilst making this record, too. We wrote these songs separately and together, and in the process there was fear, joy, freedom, denial, shame, love, acknowledgment, anger, acceptance, surprise and confusion. We both became aware of ourselves and each other a little more. We tried to make sense of the world during a specific time, and in our own ways. Some of these songs were written consciously, some were written unconsciously. We wrote them to self soothe, and to have a good time. We had an incredible time making this record.”

The song also stands in stark contrast to the previous single from the record, the vibrant alt-rocker ‘Apples,’ which saw Liz Drummond take the vocal reigns, igniting memories of Liz Phair, PJ Harvey or Dum Dum Girls at their peak, and earning praise from the likes of Consequence of Sound and The Line Of Best Fit.

Both songs followed in the footsteps of ‘Lover’ – whose release in late 2018 marked a new era of the band. Not only was it their first single from Blame My Body and their first new music since the release of their breakout debut record For The Company, it was the first release from Drummond and Hannah Field as a duo – after the departure of friend and founding member Annie Hamilton the previous year. The duo are now focused on retaining the brilliant form that made them one of Australia’s most-loved and critically acclaimed acts in recent years, while also reflecting the dark and seductive energy that first drew them millions of listeners around the world.

Little May have one of the most storied careers in contemporary Australian music. Started by high school friends home-recording their shared passion for singing, playing and writing together, they now boast more than 110 million online streams, and have performed on some of the world’s biggest stages – from local festivals like Splendour In The Grass, FallsFestival and Laneway, through to supporting the likes of Mumford & Sons, The National, City & Color, and The Vaccines.

Having recently made a triumphant return to the stages around the country performing their first national headline tour in years, the band is now poised to tour Europe this September, supporting their good friends The Rubens. All dates and venues below.
