Praise for ‘Annie’

“A sun-drenched, distorted dream with a grit that cuts through and vocals that reign supreme” – Lucy Smith, Triple J

“Hamilton’s flair for gradual layering and soundscape – the structural basis for her first single ‘Fade’ – is on display here again. The mounting intensity of the verse resolves into a sublime lower-register refrain that borrows the effortless 90s swagger of The Breeders or Veruca Salt”. – FBi Radio

“It’s vulnerable and timid but it’s also a massive body and sound that tosses you in the tumble dryer with all your neurotic angst. It’s a noisy, messy scribble of emotions that builds and builds before stripping everything back to just Annie’s voice.” ~ #2 Top Song of 2018 - Sound Doctrine

“Australia’s very own faultless indie troubadour who in 3 minutes and 10 seconds will take you on a musical journey of truly remarkable scope and execution.” - Laundry Echo

Sydney artist Annie Hamilton has followed up her critically acclaimed singles, Fade and My New Tattooed Chameleon with Kitchen, released June 28, featured on New Music Friday (USA).

On her third single, Kitchen, Sydney artist Annie Hamilton navigates memory, perception and nostalgia through cascading, ethereal vocals and sprawling instrumentation. Written while living in an isolated town in northern Iceland, the song meanders through quiet moments that left their mark, conjuring images of both intimacy and mundanity like pieces of a puzzle. Following the release of singles Fade and My New Tattooed Chameleon, the song is a testament to Hamilton’s astute, direct storytelling and her ability to combine vulnerability with a versatile sound that oscillates between hushed contemplation and explosive, cinematic soundscapes.

Recorded in Marrickville’s Golden Retriever Studios with collaborator Pete Covington (Thelma Plum, Jack River, formerly Middle Kids), Kitchen builds upon Hamilton’s flair for atmospheric arrangements, leading the listener through twists and turns of quiet moments and crashing choruses. The song’s bracingly vulnerable lyrics are juxtaposed against shimmering pop hooks and lush production, presenting the most private moments with boldness and confidence.

Since releasing her debut single, Fade, in 2018, Hamilton’s music has garnered praise from the likes of Triple J, FBi Radio, RUSSH and LNWY, accumulating almost 150,000 streams and leading to Australia-wide tours in support of Julia Jacklin, Jack River, Phantastic Ferniture and more. In addition to her solo project, Hamilton plays guitar in Jack River’s live band and runs her own eponymous fashion label, and was formerly lead guitarist in Sydney outfit Little May.

Annie has promised more new music arriving this year. If Kitchen, My New Tattooed Chameleon and Fade are anything to go by, the songs will certainly be rich in striking vulnerability and lush, immersive sonics, and will further mark the emergence of a singular Australian talent.
