Praise for HOLLOW COVES

“The Australian group seem to thrive on space, on allowing their harmonies to pour up towards the heavens.” – Clash Magazine

“Vocals of whispered, unassuming Jose Gonzalez tone, lead us down twisted, unexplored paths as a compliant palette of folk-skewed pop follows.” – Rolling Stone Australia

“Their tunes are as gentle as soft waves on the shore, conjuring up a chilled summer vibe with harmonies that could earn them the tag of Brisbane’s Simon and Garfunkel.” – The Courier Mail

“It’s rare to listen to one artist’s music and genuinely enjoy each new song as much as the last, but Hollow Coves have hit the nail on the head.” – Savage Thrills

Brisbane duo Hollow Coves have released their nostalgic new single “When We Were Young”, premiered by Billboard (USA). The duo, Ryan Henderson and Matt Carins, are widely acclaimed for composing earthy melodies and dynamic harmonies, and their new single maintains that high standard. In addition to this, the duo have announced the title of their upcoming album “Moments”, due for release through 123 Music / Sony Music Entertainment on 18th October 2019. The album is now available for pre-order.

Together the pair have composed a stunning piece that features all the classic elements of indie folk; lyrics capturing a reminiscent recount of a youthful past, gentle vocals, captivating acoustics, minimal percussion and subtle orchestral instrumentals. “When We Were Young” is an incredible addition to the band’s previous work and is guaranteed to melt the hearts of even the heartless.

Initially conceived in Brisbane and finished in Europe, “When We Were Young” pairs a soft beat, lush acoustic guitar, and dreamy piano with reflective lyrics. A shared harmony by Matt and Ryan underscores the song with pensive and poetic nostalgia.

“When we first started writing When We Were Young the melodies lead us to reflect on times from our youth. Missing the simplicity of life back then,” said Hollow Coves. “I think that’s something that a lot of people can relate to. As you get older things get harder. Life gets busy. However, as we continued writing we realized that we didn’t want the message of the song to end there. I think people can often get so caught up wishing things were the way they used to be that they don’t realize how beautiful life can be in this moment. Right now. Life can be beautiful in every season. As you get older there are so many new and exciting adventures that weren’t available in previous seasons of life. Even just having that change of perspective can make such a difference.”

As affirmed by nearly 200 million total streams for the 2017 debut EP ‘Wanderlust’ and praise from Indie Shuffle, Clash, and OnesToWatch, Hollow Coves carry light within an eloquent, engaging, and entrancing take on indie folk.

At the end of 2014, the Brisbane duo Ryan Henderson and Matt Carins penned a handful of songs and recorded them in a friend’s garage. Ryan spent the next year traveling before they finished those tunes via email and eventually uploaded them to Soundcloud. As the songs took off, Matt and Ryan decided to ditch their day jobs—as a carpenter and civil engineer, respectively.

One day in 2016, Hollow Coves checked their digital music profiles and there were several thousand spins a day; a few bloggers got on board, and it turned out that Louis Tomlinson from One Direction had tweeted a link to their music. Then there were 50,000 plays per day. The pair decided to spend three months together in Canada, and signed a manager and a licensing team. A CBS TV show from the US picked up a song for the final montage on a series called Scorpion.

Evoking comparisons to everyone from Simon & Garfunkel to Ben Howard, Angus and Julia Stone, and even Coldplay, ‘Wanderlust’ quietly emerged as a phenomenon. The two singles, “Coastline” and “Home”, surpassed 30 million streams each on Spotify, and their song “The Woods”, both the original and acoustic versions, collectively gathered over 40 million streams and over 10 million views on YouTube. Meanwhile, the boys toured alongside the likes of Tom Walker and headlined packed shows around the globe.

The duo have had huge live success around Australia, selling out their most recent headline tour well in advance. Hollow Coves also picked up Woodford Folk Festival sets in 2018 after playing 2017’s Australian Music Week to standing ovations. They scored two awards at the 2018 Gold Coast Music Awards, with their song “Coastline” taking out Song of the Year and the duo winning Breakout Artist of the Year. The duo were also part of the 2018/2019 NYE on the Hill Festival line-up.

Following their first US tour and a support run alongside Tom Walker, 2018 saw Hollow Coves retreat to the countryside of Devon in the South of England to record alongside producer Chris Bond (Ben Howard, Justin Nozuka, Xavier Rudd).

Hollow Coves emanate an enduring light with every song and show. With a shared vision the boys agree, “We hope our music can at least have some sort of positive impact. If people walk away with a changed perspective, inspired, motivated, or just a little bit more stoked with life, then we would consider that a success.”
