Melbourne singer/songwriter JUICE WEBSTER has today shared her debut EP titled, You Who Was Myself (Independent) which features the pre-released singles ‘Lover, I Swear’ and ‘You’ve Not Come to Hurt Me’. The body of work is a collection of songs written by Juice Webster over the course of a few years which details the various feelings and experiences she endured during that time.

On her debut record, Juice Webster explores common themes of heartbreak, anxiety, loneliness and bottomless love, but does so in a way that makes you feel as if Webster has rifled through your own personal journal and is now singing your own feelings back to you. The title, inspired by the Patti Smith Poem, The Lovecrafter, refers to a feeling Webster experiences often – a kind of retrograde amnesia when it comes to her past self. Knowing full well that she always was and always will be her, when listening back to songs she has written, or watching old videos of herself, Webster feels a distance between the self that was and the self that is.

Reflecting on her debut Webster shares, “This EP defines a specific time in my life when I was navigating different types of heartache. These songs hold versions of myself that I no longer feel particularly akin to, but I’m glad they exist.”

Webster, who is also one-half of Melbourne electronic-pop duo Hemm, debuted her solo alt-folk project earlier this year with the single ‘Lover, I Swear’ and again more recently with ‘You’ve Not Come To Hurt Me’. Both singles immediately caught the attention of Australian radio with spins on FBi Radio, 3RRR, 3PBS, triple j Unearthed and in the US on college radio, WKNC. Influenced by the vulnerable and introverted qualities of artists such as Grouper and Juliana Barwick, and the honest and forthcoming storytelling of artists like Adrianne Lenker, Webster’s songs delve deeply inwards.

Juice Webster’s mature brand of revealing alt-folk is something you might expect to hear from an established artist years ahead in their career, making her debut release all the more enchanting. On her debut the explicit and captivating lyrics heard within You Who Was Myself (EP) will lure you from the first note and draw you into a story or a feeling that stays with you forever – making it clear that this is just the beginning for an artist who has so much more to share.

Juice Webster’s debut EP “You Who Was Myself” is out now and available on all digital streaming services. Catch Juice Webster live at The Village Festival on October 27 in Edinburgh Gardens, Melbourne.
