Ahead of the release of their long-awaited sophomore album, Apple Crumble, Winston Surfshirt today share the latest ingredient with “Need You”, out today via Sweat It Out (AU/NZ) / Infectious (UK) / Vagrant (US).
Teasing the palate with flavours of Apple Crumble to come, “Need You” embraces a 90s hip-hop beat dashed with words of care and devotion, forming the first stanza in a collective serenade to Winston’s own special someone. Spikes of trumpet and trombone emerge from a bed of keys to ignite thrusting grooves, before a seductive sequence from the brass section brings the love song home.
Premiered by CLASH Magazine, “Need You” arrives just ahead of the act’s eight-date regional tour, kicking off this weekend at Langhorne Creek’s Handpicked Festival on November 9 before heading to Byron Bay’s Beach Hotel on November 15 to celebrate the album’s release day. The band next arrive at Maroochydore’s Sol Bar on November 16, followed by Spilt Milk Canberra on November 23, a Uni Bartakeover in Hobart on November 29 and a return to Spilt Milk Ballarat on November 30. Wrapping up, Bunbury’s Prince of Wales receives a dose of new music on December 6, before a final show ignites Margaret River’s Settlers Tavern on December 7.

Apple Crumble marks an infectious successor to the ambitious 2017 debut and triple j Feature Album, Sponge Cake. Setting the unstoppable pace for their bright future, the LP’s brass movements, hip-hop sensibilities and airy vocals garnered widespread praise among international tastemakers, including Beats 1 host Zane Lowe, Sir Elton John, Jason Bentley (KCRW), Huw Stephens, Phil Taggart (BBC Radio 1), and Lauren Laverne (BBC Radio 6). Since, returning multi-million streamed singles “For The Record”, “Make A Move” and the effervescent “Smile” have paved the way to a second full-length release and built the anticipation to something worth drooling over in Apple Crumble.
The act’s unique blend of funk, soul and hip-hop originally emerged as the solo project of singer/rapper/producer Winston Surfshirt, before organically adopting other local artists and snowballing into what is now a musical collective filling each stage to the brim and backed by a cult following. From a sell-out debut national Sponge Cake tour in 2017, to their biggest national tour yet in 2019 and festival billings at Splendour In The Grass, Spilt Milk, Falls Festival, Field Day and sold-out British & European shows in between, Winston Surfshirt continue to sell out crowds at home and abroad.
To celebrate the album to come, Winston Surfshirt are hosting an official listening party on home turf next Wednesday, November 13. Fans are invited to Henry’s Rooftop @ Hotel Steyne, Manly for an exclusive first listen of the LP in full, plus a DJ set from Winston to follow. Entry is allowed with proof of album pre-order.

My nickname is “The Amnplifier”. Why? Because around here my focus is on being a conduit for providing greater outcomes that people come here for. My day to day “work” is living in the moment, and I love helping others concentrate on finding their connection to themselves through their experiences.
