“Fantastic haunting pop. There are Buckley-esque tones to the vocals – perfect for the soaring melodies. Lovely warm, acoustic instrumentation. Defo one for fans of Augie March, Mum, Beirut etc.”

Melbourne singer-songwriter Mijo released his exciting third single on Friday 29th November 2019. We’ve Got The Numbers explores notions of freedom and collective power against dictatorship, toppling the barriers from the first moments, this anti-authoritarian anthem delivers an empowering reminder that we are more powerful than we might think and attempts to break through the illusion that we are unable to enact change.

With a frenetic rush of bass and percussion driving forth lilting anthems, it is chaotic yet empowering challenge of religious zealotry, political idolatry, and our endless search for a saviour who never comes. Driven along by rollicking percussion and a swooping bass line, the listener is invited to connect with their personal strength as an individual, as well as to be challenged to step up into their higher self.

While his previous single That’s So Pretty spoke of unrequited love having better to have loved and lostMijo now takes aim at bringing power to the people, saying “we’ve got the numbers to put them out on the street”.

Reflecting on this theme, Mijo was struck that, Human advancement is awash with stories of independent thinking individuals, collaborating with like-minded freedom seekers to usher in positive change. It’s really the only thing that has ever done the job.”

This single followed up from Mijo’s first track of 2019, You’ve Got Your Life, the creative, tongue-in-cheek music video for which was premiered by The AU Review. Receiving praise from Dave Ruby Howe of triple j Unearthed, as well as Good Intent, Amnplify and Culture Eater, the song set the tone of high-quality surf/indie rock sonics to come from Mijo.

Along with his new solo creations, Mijo has already experienced a rewarding career, having been an established and respected artist for over a decade, as well as proud co-creator of critically acclaimed band Lamplight. So far in his solo career, Mijo has toured 13 countries in Europe and has been featured as a support act to renowned artists such as Gotye, Missy Higgins, Clare Bowditch and Tommy Emmanuel, both in Australia and abroad.

Mijo is willing to go the extra mile for his craft. Eager to push the concept of solitude as a pathway to inspiration, Mijo travelled to Iceland where he stayed alone in a remote weatherboard cabin, surrounded by mountains and a breathtaking fjord.

“It was dead quiet. Shockingly quiet,” he said. “In the midst of the silence, the only thing I could hear were my innermost thoughts waiting to manifest into new songs.”

Mijo’s month-long songwriting retreat formed the genesis for a creative shift. It was the crucial starting point for his upcoming record, to be released later this year. In his spare time, along with being a prolific songwriter, Mijo is a creative mindset coach, vegan of 18 years, and a sunny optimist is usually seen sporting a bright yellow t-shirt determined to find the golden thread running through the mess of life.
