Fresh from winning the 2020 Tamworth Songwriters Association Talent Quest, Cass Hopetoun has released her debut single ‘Shots’ and its accompanying video. The track was co-written with Blake Dantier and produced by Matt Fell, who recently took home a Golden Guitar for producing the Alt-country Album of the Year, at Love Hz Studios in Sydney.

‘Shots’ is a song about coming of age’, explains Hopetoun. ‘I was realising that all my friends were in a hurry to grow up. They’re all in their mid-20s and getting fulltime jobs, and sometimes it seems like they’re allergic to having fun. One day I complained that nobody wants to do shots anymore, and that became the start of the song.’

The video for ‘Shots’, which was produced by Tribal Apes and directed by Bruce Dawson, simply oozes 70s nostalgia. It portrays a restless housewife desperately attempting to bring a bit of party back to Friday night dinner with some help from her friend tequila.

‘Bruce and I really wanted to take a risk with the narrative,’ says Hopetoun, ‘and once he found out that I had an acting background it was game on. We had a rough plot for the day, which we stuck to, but we also had a lot of fun improvising throughout the shoot.’

The resulting video is as fun as the song suggests. Equal parts sexy and silly, if this is what Friday nights are like in the Blue Mountains, then the locals should be anything but blue.

With a natural flair for the dramatic and the vocal chops to back it up and then some, Hopetoun is one to watch in 2020, as her victory in the Tamworth Talent Quest has highlighted. There’s plenty of material to come and she is eager to take her shot.

MY TOP 5 SHOTS

After my debut single ‘Shots’ was released on Monday, it’s now no secret that I love a good shot. Here is a list of my favourites to help get the party (or Monday night) started.

1. Tequila Shot
The classic yet old faithful. You simply must do it with the lime and salt though – it’s all about the experience.

2. The B53
A twist my partner’s dad put on the old B52. Simply layer Kahlua, Bailey’s then…Frangelico. This is literally a dessert in one gulp, so skip the pudding and take a shot.

3. Jägerbomb
Please don’t be lame and pre-mix the Jäger with the red bull, half the fun is the bomb experience. If you’re in need of a serious pick me up this is the shot for you.

4. Jello Shots
What is more fun then jelly? Jelly infused with vodka, that’s what. These are great to prepare the day before a partay and are a fun novelty to start the night (or day…)

5. Cinnamon Bun Shooter
Another dessert like shot because…yum! This is one of top pics because fireball is one of my favourite spirits plus adding creaming soda and whipped cream to anything can only make it better.

BIO

A somewhat unsuspecting lady of the limelight, Cass Hopetoun stumbled upon her talent for song after a school friend ‘dragged her along to the choir’ as a young student from Sydney’s nearby Blue Mountain range.

Idolising the likes of Delta Goodrem as a child, Cass began to learn to play the piano and take up regular singing lessons. Naturally, mimicry turned into personal growth and an exploration through the world of music, into musical theatre and an eventual landing in the genre of Country Music, where she now resides. Her voice is one that bares traces to the likes of some of the great country singers like Dolly Parton and Brandy Clark.

Her debut single ‘Shots’ is due for release in late March 2020 and was co-written with Country artist Blake Dantier and produced by Matt Fell at Love Hz studios. It is a song about a coming of age and quite literally refers to the relatable activity of drinking ‘Shots’ with friends.

The passion for the music is a tangible thing in Cass’s writing and singing. She recently attended the 2020 Tamworth Country Music Festival and took home 1st place in the annual talent quest.

An artist with a firm message about resilience and aiming for your dreams in spite of what adversity life might throw your way is the message Cass is conveying. You’ll be hearing it as the year unfolds, and if the young singer has her way, well into the years that follow.
