“Bands don’t come much more likeable than Custard. They’re funny, carefree, slightly weird but very endearing. And they write better pop songs than just about anyone.” The J Files, Double J

1991 may seem a long time ago to some people, but Custard can’t help but ask – “will we ever be that funky again?”

Iconic Australian band Custard makes a welcome return in 2020 with their eighth studio album, ‘Respect All Lifeforms’, set for release on Friday May 22 via ABC Music.

The album kicks off with lead single, the irresistible nationwide lockdown hit, ‘Funky Again’ – a catchy pop offering that mentions the Russian winter of Operation Barbarossa AND home renovations in one convenient 3-minute package.

The accompanying video, directed by long-time Custard collaborator, ARIA Award winning Andrew Lancaster, skilfully combines the band’s three true loves – Jacobean architecture, social distancing, and late 70s New York funk.

Director Andrew Lancaster says: “The Funky Again video is something like my 167th Custard video directed for the band over 20 years. Inspired by 1961 film ‘Last Year at Marienbad’ by Alan Resnais, we filmed at the gorgeous Aynhoe Estate in the Cotswolds, England. On the morning of the shoot there was a gloomy mist that filled the grounds, which really enhanced our choice to film with anamorphic lenses and in black and white.

“I really wanted to do something 60’s as it’s my favourite era and the song has a certain nostalgia in the lyrics. Our German cast Oliver and Rabia have been friends since school, so we had a lot of fun playing them for and against each other.  I love breaking the song with sound or dialogue in music videos so if you make it to the end you hear this. The band thought it was too sexy so we toned it down a little for the families!”

Describing the process of making the new album, front man David McCormack says: “In March 2019 we arrived in Perth to play at a festival. As we were not due on stage until early evening, Glenn booked us into Poons Head studios in Fremantle.  Matthew and I drove off to Officeworks to buy a hard drive whilst Glenn and Paul got some sounds happening in the studio.  I had some rough chord progressions for a few songs, but that was about all.  I knew one song would be called “Couple’s Fight” and another would be called “Funky Again”. Apart from that I was happy to let the universe guide us.  We ended up bashing out 8 tracks that day, 6 of which ended up on the album.  Upon returning Sydney, Glenn and I retreated to our respective studios to tinker with the tracks, we also came up with some new ones. Thanks to the magic in the air at Poons Head Studios that crisp March morning, we now have a new album. Ladies and gentlemen, Respect All Lifeforms.”

Custard circa 2020 features the classic line-up of David McCormack, Glenn Thompson, Paul Medew and Matthew Strong. Originally formed in Brisbane in 1990, Custard released a series of classic guitar pop albums over the next decade, including WisenheimerWe Have the Technology and Loverama. The band developed a cult following, touring extensively across Australia and abroad, as well as producing a parade of unforgettable singles, including ‘Apartment’ and ‘Girls Like That (Don’t Go For Guys Like Us)’.

After disbanding at the end of the 1990’s, the band returned in 2015 with new album Come Back All Is Forgiven, which was followed by 2017’s The Common Touch.

In more recent times, frontman David McCormack has found a new legion of fans as the voice of Dad ‘Bandit’ in the smash hit ABC Kids series Bluey, which has quickly become the most watched program in iView history, with 21.3 million views to date.
