Following the cancellation of his Australian headline tour and performances at Groovin The Moo, Channel Tres delivers the goods with WeedmanThe first single and video on Channel’s own brand new Art For Their Good label, Weedman is the closest he’s come to exploring the slow-rolling, blown-out g-funk of his native Los Angeles.  Imagine the warped psychedelic explorations of George Clinton, produced by DJ Quik and you’ve got Weedman.

Like all of this Compton-born artist’s music, Weedman can be taken as just a party song – of which Channel’s proven himself a master.  “I don’t like to come off preachy to people,” he says. But it’s personal too. It’s a coy examination of what it’s like to be a black man in America in a time when weed continues to be normalised and decriminalised, but the people who once sold it are still suffering legal consequences in prison.

The weedman character is the stuff of legend. He’s the guy (usually a guy) who came around you and your friends (usually much later than he said he would), who became a part of your life whether you wanted him there or not. “It’s basically a song detailing my life at a certain time,” Channel says. Getting a hold of the weedman came with its own set of rules, etiquette and personalities. “It was hard to get weed and now there’s dispensaries everywhere.”

Captured by frequent collaborator Anthony Sylvester on Super 8mm, the visual accompaniment was filmed in a secluded mansion in the Hollywood Hills.

Since the release of his first two EPs on Godmode, Channel has performed as special guest for  Robyn, Childish Gambino and Vince Staples, toured Australia twice and taken the stage at Splendour in the Grass, Primavera Sound, Movement and Field Day.  He remixed Tyler the Creator (the only time Tyler has allowed an official remix!), and collaborated with everyone from Disclosure to James Blake to King Princess.

Stay tuned for more music over the coming months – and Channel Tres will make his Coachella performance this October.
