triple j’s Requestival:

the biggest reactions, trends and takeaways

.

.

triple j’s first ever Requestival was absolute chaos and we loved it. We lol’d at your cooked requests, teared up over your moving stories, and went deep reflecting on why we love the music we do.

And it seems like triple j listeners enjoyed it as much as we did, with the request totals coming in at a bonkers 105,430, with over 26,831 new downloads of the triple j app. Plus, we were hammered with 38,000 texts across the week – nearly two and a half times as many as we’d get in a regular week.

Here are the biggest reactions, trends and takeaways we picked up on, while combing through all the requests…

.

Emoji ratios

We asked you to share your reactions on the triple j app, and you weren’t shy about hammering those thumbs up / thumbs down / heart-eyes / vomit emojis. A lot of the biggest reactions also provoked the most polarising responses – these were the top three most reacted-to songs during Requestival:

1. Taylor Swift – ‘Shake It Off’ – 21,298 reacts: 43% hearts/52.6% vomit
2. John Williams – ‘Duel of the Fates’ – 16,682 reacts: 85% hearts/9.2% vomit
3. Crazy Frog – ‘Axel F’ – 14,884 reacts: 52% hearts/39.8% vomit

.

You never thought you’d hear THAT on triple j

After Taylor Swift’s ‘Shake It Off’ was disqualified from the Hottest 100 of 2015, #Tay4Hottest100 believers got their moment. Plus, we spun bops from pop royalty like Ariana Grande, Justin Timberlake, Britney Spears, Kylie, Cardi B, Harry Styles and much more!

.

TV theme songs were a massive hit

We received requests for themes to everything from Game of Thrones to Grand Designs! The most popular was the theme to the cricket: Channel 9’s Wide World of Sports had nearly 380 requests, making it the #2 most requested song.

.

Stage and screen

Songs from musicals and movies were a very big deal, in fact the most demanded song in Requestival was John Williams’ beloved Star Wars track ‘Duel of the Fates’ (580 requests). We also got taken to Broadway, honouring your requests for ‘Defying Gravity’ – from the smash stage hit Wicked – and ‘All That Jazz’ from Chicago.

.

Thanks for the meme-ories

We knew many of you would take Requestival as an opportunity to challenge us on how far we’d go… And we went there! Across the week we played everything from John Cena’s entrance music to Axel F’s ‘The Crazy Frog’, Scatman John’s ‘Scatman (Ski-Ba-Bop-Ba-Dop-Bop)’ and much more.
