Fanny Lumsden wrote her new single ‘Fierce’ as a salute to all the fierce women who not only surround her, but also for those who have come before us.

In the accompanying video to the song, directed by Fanny & Dan Stanley Freeman, archival footage of the WW2 Women’s Land Army is featured, as well as some of the inspiring & resilient women in Lumsden’s Snowy Mountains community of Tooma NSW who have continued to nurture and rebuild their community following the devastating NSW Summer’s mega-fire.

Of the video, Fanny explains; “Women have been a part of the farming workforce for as long as farming dates back. Despite that fact it wasn’t until 1994 that the law allowed them to state their occupation as ‘farmer’. They were either, ‘domestic’, ‘helpmates’ or ‘farmers wives’. These women are exceptional, capable, and fierce and I am proud to know many of them.

A real surge in numbers came during WW11 when the Women’s Land Army initiative was introduced. Women from 18 to 50 years of age could sign up to get training and jobs on farms around the country in order to help produce enough food for the nation and the war effort. Today 49% of food in Australia is produced by fierce, gutsy women.

I wanted to acknowledge the women in the Upper Murray where we live, where we recorded the album, where I wrote the songs. These women in my community are an example of the modern-day land army.

I specifically wanted to feature these women as they were all involved in the summer fires down here and are all working towards rebuilding fences, farms, schools, hospitals and community. We live at Tooma, NSW on the western side of the Snowy Mountains right where the mega-fire joined in January. We had major fronts coming through the area (and joining) for over three weeks, were without power for 26 days and all played a huge part in supporting the community through it – whether it was on the fire truck, providing food, communication or looking after stock.  No fanfare. No complaints.

These women like so many around the country are compassionate, generous and fierce and I am proud to know them.”
