Have you always wanted to be a musician? When did you get the song writing bug?
I’ve always loved music and writing. I was first attempting to write songs at about 8 or 9 years old. I still remember the first song I finished, which was called My Hero and it was about my dog. By the time I was a young teenager I knew this is what I wanted to do with my life and I’ve never changed my mind.

How would you describe your sound? Why do you think people resonate with your music?
I guess I’d say my sound is pop with folk influences. I write about real things that I experience, and I hope people maybe relate to those stories. I’m also not afraid to write dramatic, emotional music, and we all need a good yelling-in-the-car song sometimes.

Which artist’s music and/or performance, past or present, inspires you today?
For me, Taylor Swift’s writing is really moving, especially her more folky tracks. She has this ability to capture moments in time so vividly and makes you think “hey, that sounds just like something I went through”, so it makes you feel understood.

Your new single/EP/Album has just been released/is about to be released! Describe its origin and evolution.
I wrote “As You Are” about a night I had whilst living in London when I began to realize I had feelings for someone. This song is kind of a celebration of that person. I wanted to make it sound a bit like a ’60s love song, so I kept that in mind when choosing chords and developing the music. We ended up using saxophone, sleigh bells, and a ’66 Höfner violin bass (the same kind that Paul McCartney used) to really drive that sound home. It ended up being such a fun track to record. I usually write more melancholy songs, so it was nice to do something different.

Is there an EP or Album on the drawing board?
“As You Are” is the last single from my debut EP, which has five tracks and will be released in September. “As You Are” is unlike the other songs on the EP but they all have commonalities. For example, every song on the EP is about experiences I had while I was living in London and most of them were written there too.

Any tours or events coming up soon? What are you looking forward to, and what can the fans expect?
COVID-19 has really shaken up my touring/gigging plans, as I’m sure it has for most musicians. So at the moment I’m focusing on releasing this single and the EP.

If you could perform with any music artist, Alive or Dead, who would you choose? And why?
The Beatles. I’ve been listening to their music since I was a kid. They were storytellers; their songs can bring you to tears and then have you chuckling by the next track.

Do you have any long-term aspirations as a music artist?
I’d love to tour in Europe, especially the Netherlands and Germany. I’m also eager to keep releasing as much music as possible, I’ve already started planning the next EP after this one.

What is the best thing about performing to a live audience? What’s been the career highlight so far?
When you perform live, you have the opportunity to directly connect with people in the moment. You’ll get people come up to you after a show and tell you how a specific song affected them or made them feel heard or less alone and that is an indescribable feeling.
In terms of a career highlight, just gigging in Camden and Soho in the UK was amazing.

Releases ’60s-Inspired Pop Song

Australian singer-songwriter Jemima’s new single “As You Are” is a nod to the music she grew up on: ’60s songs she discovered as a child whilst rummaging through records in her parent’s garage.

“As You Are” – which is the second single from her upcoming debut EP – is about falling for someone, but most importantly, accepting them for who they are.

The use of saxophone, sleigh bells, and a 1966 Höfner violin bass leaves the song reminiscent of a ’60s love song. But Jemima’s contemporary melodies and vocal delivery make the single very much welcome in 2020’s pop scene.

Jemima’s debut EP will have five tracks, including her previous release “Patient”. The folk-pop ballad explores the intricacies of mental health, which motivated Jemima to donate 100% of the money earned during the first three months of release to the Black Dog Institute. “Patient” also won the approval of folk musician Angus Stone. After hearing the song, Stone invited Jemima to his home studio to sing backing vocals on his latest Dope Lemon release, “Streets of Your Town”.

Recorded at Rockinghorse Studios Byron Bay, “As You Are” was written by Jemima, recorded and mixed by Paul Pilsneniks, and mastered by Paul Blakey.

Jemima’s debut EP will be released September 4.
