In 2005, legendary Australian singer-songwriter John Schumann, together with his long-time friend David Minear, collaborated on an album called Lawson.
A collection of Henry Lawson poems set to music by Schumann, Lawson features iconic Australian talent across its thirteen tracks, including Russell Morris, Rob Hirst (Midnight Oil), Shane Howard (Goanna), Mike Rudd, Steven and Alan Pigram and more.
15 years on, the critically acclaimed Lawson has become a cornerstone of Australian music history and has just been re-released.
“As the centenary of Henry Lawson’s death on 2 September 2022, approaches, David and I thought it was a good time to pull Lawson off-the-shelf and dust it down.” said John Schumann.
“In the brave new digital world, where Australian literature struggles for relevance, we’re both pretty proud of Lawson. We see it as a contribution to Australia’s cultural storehouse. Fifteen years later, we decided to rerelease it in case people missed it the first time around”.
Many of Henry Lawson’s stories and poems are just as relevant in 2020 as when they were written. When our elected representatives commend themselves for their superb stewardship of our national economy, the opening lines of one of Lawson’s most famous poems, ‘Faces in the Street’ ring loudly.
“They lie the men who tell us in a loud decisive tone
that want is here a stranger, that misery’s unknown”

Lawson is an album for Australians who understand and appreciate that we have an identifiable distinctive voice, a unique cadence and vernacular. Henry Lawson recognised this, presenting it to his fellow countrymen and women through his stories and poetry. In return, Lawson’s literary brilliance has been celebrated for close to one hundred years.
“Do we need Lawson today? Do we even care whether we have a national literature? David and I think it’s important because writers like Lawson remind us where we came from. And if we don’t know where we came from, we can’t know where we’re going. That’s reason enough.” concluded Schumann.
Due to be officially launched at the Henry Lawson Festival in Grenfell in June, Lawson’s reissue was delayed due to the COVID-19 pandemic and subsequent cancellation of the festival. Discussions are currently with a major metropolitan symphony orchestra with a view to presenting a large-scale, live production of Lawson. The Album. The Concert. in 2021.
To celebrate the reissue, on Saturday 12 September, Lawson will be brought to life on stage at Adelaide’s Governor Hindmarsh. John Schumann and The Vagabond Crew will perform the album in its entirety, with narration by ABC broadcaster and journalist, David Bevan. The narrative has been written by Professor Brian Matthews, the foremost international expert on the life and work of Henry Lawson.

AMNPLIFY – DB
My nickname is “The Amnplifier”. Why? Because around here my focus is on being a conduit for providing greater outcomes that people come here for. My day to day “work” is living in the moment, and I love helping others concentrate on finding their connection to themselves through their experiences.
Why start a music environment? The truth is I love music, I love writing, and I love life. I work with musicians every day, and I feel certain that I will be until they put me in the ground. I have been managing people in businesses of some sort for over thirty five years so along the way I have developed some “wisdom” from my regular and constant “observations”.
Amnplify your experience. That is what we want you to do here, and if you want to let me know why you do, or don’t, shoot me a message on Facebook.
Hope you enjoy yourself here and find something that hits you somewhere.
