Last night on Network Ten’s “The Masked Singer”, the much loved ‘Queen’ was revealed to be singer/songwriter Kate Miller-Heidke after she performed a jaw-dropping rendition of ‘I Will Survive’.

Kate has been filming the series in Melbourne over the past two months under the mask, performing songs including “Blinding Lights”, “Paint It Black”, “Diamonds Are A Girl’s Best Friend”, “Shake It Off”, “Lose You To Love Me” and “Dancing On My Own”.

Her latest release ‘A Quiet Voice’ follows ‘Deluded’ and ‘This Is Not Forever’, all taken from her forthcoming fifth studio album ‘Child In Reverse’, out October 30 through EMI Music Australia.

Kate says, “This was a song I wrote with Tobias Kuhn. We were bonding over our shared love of Suzanne Vega. This song is about feeling overstimulated and anxious. I have learned I need to actively work to avoid falling into feeling those things as a kind of default position. I do feel nostalgia for the less-connected world. It’s hard and rare to feel at peace.”

Produced and recorded in Melbourne by Evan Klar, Kate’s forthcoming fifth studio album is 11 songs sculpted into 3- to 4-minute shots of love and fear, memory and empathy, rage and redemption. It’s an album of airborne melodies, sinuous grooves, brilliant textures and, as always, a little more gravity than her feather-light voice implies.

“I keep getting drawn back to pop music,” Kate says, despite recent triumphs in opera (The Rabbits), musical theatre (Muriel’s Wedding) and screen (The Divorce). “The minimalism, the economy… I find that incredibly rewarding and challenging. It’s like a quest to nail the perfect pop song. When it can be done, for me, as a listener, it’s my favourite music.”

Child In Reverse is out on October 30 through EMI Music Australia

The album is available to pre-order on Kate’s Official Store alongside a new range of merch, including a limited edition coloured 7” vinyl single of ‘Zero Gravity’, available for the first time in a physical format.
