How long have you been writing music and singing? Has making music always been a part of your life?
I’ve been writing music since I was about 9 or 10? I was super young and I remember I was on my way to primary school one morning and asked my Mum to pull the car over so I could write down my first lyrics ahah! Music has always been in my life! I can’t remember a day I have gone without listening to it or playing it!

What kind of music did you grow up listening to? Do you feel the music you grew up with has had an influence on your own work so far?
My parents listened to a lot of Johnny Cash and Norah Jones but I always had a huge CD collection that I’d blast in the car! My go to was definitely Taylor Swift! Oh 100%! I’m a huge storyteller in my music and I think from listening to some the greats like Cash and modern day artists like Swift, it has for sure shaped the way I write music.

How would you describe your personal sound? How do you see your sound evolving in the future?
My sound I would say is a combination of Mallrat / Fletcher mixed with Taylor Swift. I would love to see my music start leaning towards BENEE’s fresh vibe with a bit of E^ST!

Your new single, “Sorry”, is available on all download and streaming services from the 16th of October! How long have you been working on the single? Was it enjoyable to make?
I wrote the single back in July but have been working on it closely with my producer SOFTNYLON for a good few months! This was one of those songs that just wrote itself and has such a special place in my heart. I am so so so incredibly proud of this song and the lyrics behind it.

“Sorry” is primarily a song about heartbreak and realizations. Can you share the inspiration or origins behind the song?
Sorry speaks from the perspective of somebody who can’t put their whole self into their relationship. I think the inspiration definitely came out of nowhere for me. I couldn’t sleep one night and had the first few lines stuck in my head and knew I had to record and create this song.

Is it ever really difficult to pour your own life into your music with such rawness and honesty as you have, or do you find it easier to write what you know?
Thankfully no! Songwriting is such a personal experience that everyone approaches differently. I tend to use writing a song as a stepping stone to help me understand something that I’ve experienced in my life. I fall in love with the process every single time because each instance is so unique and fragile yet other people have most likely experienced that same situation too.

.

.

Let’s take it back to May this year when you released your debut single, “Blank Spaces”. How did it feel to be releasing your first ever single into the world? How do you feel about that song now?
So extremely nerve-wracking! I felt like I was learning to walk on ice! Blank Spaces had been in my songbook for a few months before I even considered releasing it and before I knew it, I was in a studio with producers recording demos and filming a music video! I have grown already so much as an artist since Blank Spaces has been released but it will always be my baby debut single.

How did you come up with your debut song, and when did you decide you wanted to record it? What was that first recording experience like for you?
So Blank Spaces was written around October or November of 2019 and was one of the songs I had shown a few friends at uni where they all immediately loved it. Fast forward to May 2020, I was working with some students at JMC Academy and we collectively decided it was the strongest song to introduce me onto the music scene! The recording experience was intense! We were on a really tight time frame so it was go-go-go for 2 days straight.

Can you share some of the events of the journey that led to you releasing “Blank Spaces”?
I met a girl at my uni who needed an emerging artist for her assignment which involved building up your social media presence and establishing you as a muso. We worked together for about 2-3 months improving my instagram, building my following, having photoshoots etc; About half way through the assignment, COVID happened and I was sent back to my hometown in Cairns, QLD. Believe it or not, this student and I proceeded to organise filming days, studio time and launching my debut single from different cities!

.

.

Who are your biggest music influences at the moment? Who would you love or strive to be compared to?
ooo that’s a tough one! I have been obsessed with Fletcher’s new album at the moment as well as King Princess, Odette and G-flip! Oh for sure Taylor Swift or Julia Michaels, they are incredible !

What’s coming for you in the next few months? Are you working on more new music at the moment?
I am currently completing my fourth trimester at uni at the moment so I am jam packed with creating new music! I have a few exciting things planned for in the early new year so you’ll have to stay tuned to find out what I’m working on!

Do you have any plans for a bigger release in the near future, such as an EP or album? Is that something you are thinking about already?
The dream has always been to release an album. I’ve wanted that the day I first bought a CD from the shops! I would absolutely love to have an EP released by the end of 2021 with some cheeky singles released beforehand.

.

.

I know there are lots of people who would love to see you live! Are you planning any live gigs your fans can look forward to? If not, where is one place would you love to perform given the opportunity?
As of right now, the gig scene is very slow in Cairns, QLD at the moment but I travel to Brisbane and the Gold Coast quite a bit so I’d love to be able to play a few venues when I visit!

If you could collaborate with any music artist on one of your songs in the future, who would you choose? And why?
I think collabing with another Aussie homegrown artist such as G-flip, FLUME or Peking Duk would be incredible and absolutely mind blowing. That would be an absolute dream just to meet them let alone work with them!! G-Flip is one of my all time faves who I was meant to see live at SPLENDOUR this year. Her music is so much fun yet meaningful.

Do you have any long-term goals as a musician that you think about when you envision your future? In three years’ time, for instance, where do you hope to be in your music career?
In 3 years time I would have loved to have made the ARIA charts either as a songwriting or artist. To be fair, I get excited when one person listens to me on Spotify, let alone a whole country listening to me on the charts! I’d love to have put out an album and toured around Australia. I’d be over the moon the day I hear one of my songs on the radio to be honest!
