Interview with
HAZEY

‘Simplicity and clarity makes Hazey tick. The Bristol based duo brings energy, confusion and mystery to the rock scene. The pair certainly aren’t afraid to express their weird side and want to share their fun outlook on life with fans. Etherial guitars blended with blocked rhythms set the foundation for their sound; allowing memorable hooks to bloom and play off pulsing synthesisers. Peculiar lyrical themes can act as an eerie but beautiful overlay rather than the soul focus of the music.
Their debut single ‘Kimberly’ explores the darkness that thrives within our minds when we are unconscious. “Kimberly is our nightmare. Trapped in a maze of chaotic thoughts. Helpless but wonderful. We hope you enjoy the ride”.
These young lads have got huge plans for 2021 with their debut E.P hitting in the new year. Don’t settle on these guys because you never know what’s coming next!’

How did you all find each other and decide to share your musical talents as a group?
I (Justin) had moved from the city, to the town that Tim lived when we were 11 and we met through the school we went to. We played football together and bonded through playing music together – I eventually joined a band that Tim was in and we played shows in Bristol covering pop punk songs which was entertaining to say the least… In August this year, we decided to come back together and start this new journey together with Hazey.
How would you describe your sound? Why do you think people resonate with your music?
Etherial Guitars lie over a bed of thumping drums and fuzzy bass tones. This sets the foundation for pulsing synthesisers to bounce off the lead vocal lines. Melody is king for us. We spend a lot of time creating memorable hooks and sculpting sounds to create a special outcome. Inspiration for our music comes from bands like The Killers, Deaf Havana, The Cure, Boston Manor & The 1975.
As you’ll discover from our next couple of singles, we enjoy going mellow with our songs and aren’t limiting ourselves to the typical indie rock sound. We want to keep people guessing with all of our releases while still keeping a cohesive sound for our fans to connect with.
Which artist’s music and/or performance, past or present, inspires you today?
We both went to see The 1975 headline Reading & Leeds festival in 2019. They were absolutely incredible. There were fireworks, dancers and the crowd were all bouncing! It was one of the best performances that we’ve ever seen. Getting Hazey on to Reading & Leeds main stage is a huge goal of ours.
Your new single “KIMBERLY” is about to be released! Describe its origin and evolution.
Kimberly was born out of a terrible nightmare that never seemed to end. The song is about exploring the darkness that thrives in our minds while we are unconscious. The music video shows how things start off pretty normal but it slowly gets weirder as the video develops. It’s got drums, bass and guitars pumping throughout the track and contains the memorable recurring hook “Kimberly, can’t you see it? What are you looking for?”. We chose it to be our debut single because it has plenty of energy and the video theme gave us an opportunity to showcase our personalities.
Kimberly is our nightmare. Trapped in a maze of chaotic thoughts. Helpless but wonderful. We hope you enjoy the ride.

Is there an EP or Album on the drawing board?
Kimberly is the first single off our Debut EP that will be released in spring 2021.
Any tours or events coming up soon? What are you looking forward to, and what can the fans expect?
Fans can expect a variety of material that will represent our personality and the unique way of taking on life during these strange times. We are working on plenty of behind the scenes content for people that sign up to our mailing list (which will be available soon!). It’s essential for us that fans can feel like a member of the band and see how mad we both are! Hopefully, we will be able to go ahead and plan a home town show in Bristol for the end of next year.
If you could perform with any music artist, Alive or Dead, who would you choose? And why?
Good Charlotte as we have taken so much inspiration from them and the Madden bro’s are just awesome people. They were one of the first bands we got into and used to do acoustic covers of their songs when we were in school!
Do you have any long-term aspirations as a music artist?
We would love to take Hazey around the world and play in as many different countries as we can. We both love travelling and attending music festivals. Playing huge festivals like Reading & Leeds, Download and Glastonbury would be a dream come true for us.
