A dreamy indie folk/ rock/ pop group from Christchurch, New Zealand, THERE’S A TUESDAY consists of two female front women both on guitars and vocals, Nat Hutton and Minnie Robberds, with Angus Murray and Joel Becker on bass and drums, respectively.
Possessing wonderful harmonies and gorgeous songs, There’s A Tuesday won 2019’s Smokefree Rockquest (the NZ equivalent of Triple J Unearthed, with previous winners incl. Ladyhawke, Kimbra and Broods), which provided the platform to record debut single ‘pinata head’ at Neil Finn’s Round Head Studios – the single rocketed to #13 on the New Zealand singles chart, and received substantial radio play nationwide. They’ve gone on to become the darlings of NZ’s festival circuit, landing upcoming spots at RNA, RNV, Le Currents, Electric Ave and More.

“There’s A Tuesday” are a cool new indie pop rock band that hail from New Zealand. The band is made up of 4 artists, Nat Hutton and Minnie Robberds: both on guitar and vocals, Gus Murray on drums and Joel Becker on bass.
Hutton and Robberds were the winners on New Zealand’s Rock Quest last year. Jump forward a year and the dynamic duo have formed a band with Murray and Becker and have released their debut album “Dance With Me Before We Cry”.
The EP features 7 songs which take you on a soft, gentle emotional journey. Throughout 2020 they have released their songs “Dandelions”, “Sounds of the Stars”, “FOMO” and “Amsterdam”. The band have a swag of shows lined up in New Zealand in 2021 including some festivals, Hopefully they’ll hit our shores in Australia soon, but in the meantime, we get to listen to the debut EP to delight our senses in preparation of seeing them live.

The first track on the EP is “FOMO”. As the acronym suggests, the song is based around the Fear Of Missing Out. Hutton and Robberds deliver a beautiful harmonizing vocal on this track proving to us why they were deserving winners of Rock Quest. The start of the track has a sound like The Cure’s “Lovesong”. The hip music clip that goes along with this song gives a taste of what we have experienced this year with the clip featuring a video conference call and depicts many different scenarios of boredom in lockdown. We all can relate to this clip!
The second track on the EP, “Amsterdam” is another of the band’s singles. An upbeat tempo song that you can dance to. Hutton says about the track “this song is about people in your life you can’t help but love, but it’s ok to ask them to leave and come around another time soon”. The song has catchy lyrics that will have you singing along after just one listen. The lyrics in the chorus “I’ve been on the outside, will you ever let me in. I’ve been feeling so tired, jump in my car to be alone in the night time” once again is a sentiment that the listener will be able to say – “I get that. I’ve been there”

“Picture” is the third track on the album, and it starts off with a very slow tempo and dreamy sounding vocal with a quite guitar in the background. The song then kicks off into a faster beat after the slow intro. A sweet sentimental song with lyrics about a picture; a portrait that has been drawn of the person who finds it. The chorus of “I don’t look anything like the picture you drew of me. Would you rub it out please” has a playfulness of the story the song is about. It is a fun pop sounding song that is very easy to dance along to with a cool beat.
“Sound of the Stars” is a beautiful, mesmerizing track with a slow pace and soulful sound. The instruments feature a soft gentle sound to compliment the vocals. The song picks up ever so slightly but keeps a nice rhythmic slow song tempo. The harmonies of Hutton and Robberds on this track are hypnotic like, somber sounding. The line in the first verse “why are you so fascinated by the stars you ask? I like that you ask” leads you into a spellbinding perspective of the stars in the night sky. A beautiful ballad indeed.
“Dandelions” is another song on the EP that has been released this year. A nice lighthearted song with very catchy lyrics. You only need one listen through of this song and you are already singing along with the chorus and tapping your feet. A song depicting those relationship feels stating in the lyrics “you don’t have to say you love me, I don’t mind”. The band have said of their music they try to write honestly about the highs and lows of life. This is one of those ‘life’ songs that is relatable where the listener would surely say – yep, I have been here, and I can relate!
.
.
The last two songs on the EP move into a more solemn side of the band’s sound and storytelling. The song “North Wing” really brings to the forefront that message from the band stating that they write and sing about the highs and lows of life. “North Wing” is the storytelling side of the lows that happen in life. A slow melancholy song reflecting on a story of someone being in hospital. The lyrics draw you in to the story leaving you wanting to know more about who the person is and what happened. Even though the song is emotionally sad, it is a moving and heartfelt piece.
The final song on the EP is titled “Nightmare”. Another slow tempo song with beautiful harmonizing vocals from Hutton and Robberds. Instrumentally the sounds of the guitar with slow drawn out twang sounds brings that feel and emotion of sadness to the song. The song sings of heartbreak, with the very first line “you had to let me go” letting the listener know that it is a song of pain and loss. The main lyric of “It would be a nightmare if you’re not there” repeated throughout the song and at the end drives home the feeling of the heart break. In the last repetition of the lyric the song hits a crescendo of sound like driving that knife through the heart to give the feeling of the pain experienced. The sound then dwindles off into quietness as the song ends.
The debut EP from There’s A Tuesday is a delightful collection of the bands work which showcases their storytelling ability with their lyrics and music. Each song takes you on a different journey and experience. This EP will make you feel a full spectrum of emotions and like a good book, this one will be hard to put down and you’ll want to play it again and again.
