Christmas with new song

Sydney artist BEN WALKER is finishing 2020 on a high with a new songwriting deal with 2030 Records and the release of his third single, Christmas-themed pop-folk track, Money in the Jar. Produced by friend and musician Thomas Keating, Ben set out to write a song for the festive season that spoke to those missing family; a song with a deeper meaning.
With family overseas in the UK Ben felt a struggle to connect with loved ones and found himself reflecting on how easily we take family time for granted.
“Money in the Jar is an alternative to the traditional Christmas songs, I want to evoke memories of wonderful Christmas’ past and also acknowledge that, for some, Christmas this year will be very different,” he tells of the song.
“Money in the jar is the third song I’ve released this year and the second one produced by my friend and fellow musician Thomas Keating. My idea was to produce a unique Christmas song. I hope my melody and lyrics draw the listener into the story and capture their imagination. Tom is a very talented musician, which gives us the ability to layer sounds – on this song the electric guitar in particular adds a different dimension to the song which I just love. 2020 has been such a tough year for so many, I wanted to celebrate the joy of Christmas but also talk a little about some of the reflections I have had over the year.”

After a 20-year Corporate career, Ben took a break in the middle of 2019 to focus on his music. The result is “Playing Alone”, “Smiles” and now, “Money in the Jar.”
“After completing a foundation course at TAFE I was offered a place at the Australian Institute of Music studying for a degree in Contemporary Music (Vocal Major),” Ben tells of his story of becoming a recording artist. “The course is quite performance focussed and so I had ear marked the year to expand my performance ability and to do more gigs. Then Covid hit. Our course moved online and we ended up recording a lot of our submissions – it was the prompt I needed to start thinking about recording and releasing music. My vocal coach Leigh McRae encouraged me down that path and when song 1 went well I challenged myself to release 3 by the end of the year.”
Ben’s debut single “Smiles” earned national radio play and he is already seeing impressive success in the streaming world. Having spent this year focusing on debuting his music career, 2021 is looking bright!
“As well as releasing music, I recently joined new label 2030 Records as a songwriter and I’m looking forward to working with a diverse range of artists on new projects. I’m excited about next year, getting back into work, continuing the degree, releasing more music, working on my live performance and writing for the label – it feels busy and it hasn’t even started – but, as a father of two, I know that whatever happens with my music I have two diehard fans!”
