COVID made of the arts industry in 2020. Fortunately for West Australians, the state was largely unaffected and we were able to continue with live shows quite quickly. Birds of Tokyo made their return to the stage, quite spectacularly, selling out two shows at the world heritage listed Fremantle Prison. Fremantle Prison is one of Western Australia’s most fascinating and significant cultural attractions and some took the opportunity to tour the prison before finishing the night under the stars with Birds of Tokyo.

With their tight, 3 vocal layering and elements of jazz, funk and rock, 4 piece Indie pop band, Dulcie, entertained the early comers.  A relatively young band, they exhibit musicianship well beyond their years. They had a number of people up on their feet and dancing throughout their set. Hopefully with more stage experience they will exude more confidence (it’s certainly well warranted!). Between song banter was kept to a minimum, but they did stop to thank the crowd for coming down early and dancing, especially in this heat!

AC/DC’s instantly recognisable Jailbreak riff rang out, introducing Birds of Tokyo to the stage. “You ain’t ever getting out of here!” Ian Kenny cried out before launching into Empire. Honestly, I think we would all be OK with that!  A large number of people had started the night sitting on the grassed area, but that didn’t last long once the band hit the stage! People were up on their feet and dancing, which continued throughout the night.

“I’d go with YOU anywhere!” A voice from the crowd cried out after the band had performed the song of the same name. “I can feel your sincerity!” laughed Kenny in response. This was only the beginning, fans would be yelling all sorts of things out to the band throughout the night, and the band were very responsive back. A very positive vibe radiated throughout the venue.

The set had a very nice flow to it, with an upbeat start (I’d go with you anywhere, Weekend), slowing it down with Two of Us and Anchor before moving into a heavier mid-section (Silhouettic, Brace), slowing it down again (Design, Good Lord) before finishing on another upbeat note (Lanterns, This Fire). It is also worth noting that the stage lights effectively matched the moods of the songs (e.g. blue for Broken Bones and red for Silhouettic). Wonderful production team!

Before launching into Wild At Heart, the band made clear their distraction due to the flashing headbands littered throughout the venue. “I like the headbands!” Kenny commented “It’s all we can see when the lights go down!”. “Pretty lights!” Guitarist, Adam Spark, agreed. Someone must have handed Kenny one of the headbands, because one could be seen on his head after that spiel.

Unlike Kenny’s previous statement of “Stay here together, forever”, unfortunately, the night did come to a close. But, people did shuffle out on the building with big smiles on their faces. This would be one prison that we would have been happy to be locked up in!
