Sydney Indie Rocker I Have Four Names will release his new EP Spike It on Friday 12th February, which is premiered today exclusively via AMNplify.

The EP is a collection of catchy, bass-driven Indie Rock that is influenced by the likes of Future of the Left, The Faint, Jeff Rosenstock and Regurgitator.

I Have Four Names is the moniker of Sydney producer Will Evatt. The talented multi- instrumentalist released his debut EP The Other Hand Is Always Greener in 2015. He then followed up in 2020 with the release of his album called IH4N.

Will recently headed back into the studio to record his new EP. The EP was mixed and mastered at the legendary Studios 301.

I Have Four Names recently released the first single from the EP called Capital A’s. The single was aired on over 50 radio stations throughout Australia and received positive coverage from AAA Backstage, Around The Sound, Australian Musicians Radio, AMNplify and many more.

New EP Spike It is available for streaming on all online stores and on 7″ Orange Swirl vinyl HERE

track by track review

Capital A’s
This was the first song I wrote for the new batch of I Have Four Names songs. I wanted something which was a distillation of everything the project represents – catchy indie rock, with some stranger excursions to keep things interesting. Staying with the theme, the lyrics have callbacks to previous songs from the IH4N LP. It’s basically a pump-up song for I Have Four Names itself, a reminder to keep motivated.

Spike It
I’ve always wanted to do a track leaning hard into the fuzzed-out bass-heavy sound which I love to hear in other records. Specifically this song was inspired by Beck’s ‘Threshold’ from the Scott Pilgrim soundtrack, though it soon took on a direction of its own. The lyrics on this track are basically about trying to work out what someone is thinking when what they are saying to you is so confusing that it’s like they’re not speaking any known language.  I mixed this song myself and am planning on having a different mix done for the next album later this year.

Maybe No
This was never meant to be a ‘the world is really going down the drain, huh’ song, but like many artists who recorded in 2020, it was kind of hard not to draw inspiration from what was happening when it came to the lyrics.  I played around with having a refrain repeating throughout the song, which is a little different from how I usually structure my songs. I like the way this one came together.

The William S Clark Method
One of the more fun songs from the IH4N LP was ‘The Solomon Method’, telling the story of Japanese competitive hot dog eater Takeru Kobayashi and framing his rivalry with hot dog champ Joey Chestnut as this insane hatred verging on a diss track. A while back a friend was talking to me about this 19th century American scientist named William S Clark who became a beloved figure in Japan but was forgotten completely in his home country. Sounded like a chance to tell another exaggerated and minimally-researched story of Japan v US cultural rivalries! Instrumentally this is a bit out there, but tracks like this are important to the project to maintain a bit of unpredictability.

The Methods (Credits)
This is a little mashup of The Solomon Method and The William S Clark Method acting as closing credits to those previous songs. If this is going to become a frequent exercise for I Have Four Names, they may as well have a theme song. It ends promising more ‘Method’ tracks. We’ll see if anybody wants or deserves that.

HPM (full version)
When I was finishing up the IH4N LP, I had a little track called ‘HPM’ which I didn’t think fit on the album. I ended up using an instrumental excerpt as an interlude. Oddly enough, that interlude became a fan favourite on that album, so as a bonus track for the EP I went back and completed the full version.
