The final day of Womadelaide 2021 drew a big crowd early. The opening act was Siberian Tiger, an emerging Adelaide duo comprising of Chris Panousakis (Timberwolf / Matt Corby band) and Bree Tranter (The Middle East / Matt Corby band). Siberian Tiger took out the Best New Artist Award at the 2020 SA Music Awards and this event was their biggest to date under this name. Both musicians are highly accomplished and experienced and eased the audience into the night’s entertainment with their dreamy, folk-laden tunes. They were accompanied by a 5-piece band with string quartet.

The hugely popular The Teskey Brothers followed next, winning hearts instantly with their soulful Blues and Motown vibe. They treated the crowd to songs from each of their albums including a wonderful cover of INXS’s ‘Tear Us Apart’. Brothers Josh and Sam grew up listening to their parent’s extensive Soul and Blues collection and were influenced by many of the old American Soul and Blues greats including Otis Redding and Johnny Taylor. It is the familiarity of their music that is part of their winning formula. Each song sounds so familiar although being totally original and authentic. In closing their set, they performed ‘Pain and Misery’, their first song released, followed by the wonderfully harmonious ‘Hold Me’.

The closing act of the night was truly special. Midnight Oil & First Nations Collaborators performed Makarrata with special guests Dan Sultan, Alice Skye, Troy Cassar-Daley, Tasman Keith, Leah Flanagan Frank Yamma and Bunna Lawrie. ‘The Makarrata Project’ is the band’s 12th studio album released in October 2020. Peter Garrett explained that Makarrata means ‘coming together after a struggle’. Songs like ‘First Nation’, ‘Change the Date’ and ‘Uluru Statement from The Heart’ are a powerful call for justice and recognition for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people. Midnight Oil’s set was a wonderful celebration of indigenous musicians and sent a powerful message to the enthralled audience. The Oils also performed many of their well-known hits, making sure the crowd stayed on their feet, dancing. It was a very fitting end to a highly successful Womadelaide 2021. The Womad team definitely showed the world that live music festivals can go ahead and be Covid safe. Congratulations to all who made this wonderful weekend of music happen.
