Australia’s new RNB princess on the rise and creative powerhouse Emalia has released her highly anticipated debut EP UNMUTED today via Sony Music Entertainment Australia. The EP features new single and accompanying official music video for ‘Messy’.

Emalia formally invites you into her living room, to sit on her couch, turn on the TV, and look back on the past few years of her life. Years that have been dedicated to learning, personal growth and the creation of UNMUTED. Each track on the EP represents a different ‘channel’, capturing unique moments and experiences in Emalia’s life. Emalia explains that television has always inspired her music and has instilled the significance of storytelling to her writing process.
Further unpacking the EP, Emalia says, “UNMUTED is my metaphorical megaphone finally being turned on. It’s about the moments you say the things you couldn’t before. I am finally able to share the beginning of my story and my voice with you, and I hope it helps someone out there to do the same.”
New single ‘Messy’ was written and produced with Carmen Reece (Ariana Grande, Kanye West) and PK Degeddingseze (2Chainz, Chris Brown, Toni Braxton). It sees Emalia explore feelings of anger and regret in a sassy and powerful way, both lyrically and sonically.

“‘Messy’ was my epiphany that I dodged a bullet. I saw an ex-flame, heard about the things he gets up to nowadays, and realised I don’t have to put up with that anymore. I caught a partner doing wrong by me, I called him out on his BS, and got the heck out of there. In my experience, it’s incredibly freeing to remove yourself from a toxic situation and later gain a new, clearer perspective on someone.”
Previous single ‘Mistake’ also boasts impressive writing and producing credits with frequent collaborator One Above (Hilltop Hoods, Kota Banks). Exploring the loss of first love, Emalia reflects on the growth she had from this experience, “We ended it, I missed him, I learned to live without him, I owned my mistakes and grew from them. After a while, I was able to look back and recognise the part I played in the relationship and how to do better next time. This is one of my favourites on the EP.”
Other previously released singles include the sweet ‘Suga Rush’, of which Emalia was creative director for the official music video; and empowering anthem ‘IOU’ featuring rising US rapper Guapdad 4000; watch the official music video here.
On other channels, ‘False Advertising’ and ‘Woman’s Intuition’ touch on experiences in relationships. ‘False Advertising’ speaks about the versions of ourselves we let others see, and the importance of learning “to love and be comfortable with who you really are, and always show that unapologetically.” On ‘Woman’s Intuition’, Emalia learns to trust her intuition, reminding women to do the same, and to value and respect yourself.
Closing track ‘DNA’ sees Emalia open up about her mental health battle. Written with AFTERHRS and Liza Owen, the track is a timeless question from Emalia about life and living it.
In 2020 Emalia made waves with her performance as feature artist for Taka Perry’s triple j’s ‘Like A Version’ alongside AGIRL and Gia Vorne. Other recent highlights include supporting Jessica Mauboy for the most watched YouTube ‘Music Session’ of the year, hosting a virtual fan event with US pop star Madison Beer and headlining the very first Women In Pop Live concert at Oxford Art Factory in Sydney.
On May 15, Emalia will take to the stage at Sydney’s The Vanguard to mark the launch of the EP and again on May 28th for The Friday Juice at Hotel Illawarra (Wollongong). Tickets available here.
