In a previous life, Tim Poulton traversed the world as an internationally acclaimed photographer. Today he is a musician, composer, songwriter and producer under the moniker Timothy And The Apocalypse taking his view of the world from photography and projecting it instead through the prism of electronic music. With his impending debut album, “Future So Bright” merely weeks away from release, Poulton delivers a strong effort with lead single “You Oughta Love Me” the harmoniously celestial track which serves as a great introduction to Poulton’s latest material.
“You Oughta Love Me” has taken elements of what made the late 90s and Y2K era of acid jazz and french house so innovative. The track embraces a technologically driven sound yet still adheres to a fundamentally organic sound. The single opens with a large spatial soundscape that sets the stage for Poulton to slowly layer drums, snare tracks and synths. And even as the track invites you into a world of psychedelic exploration the production remains very clean. The track also features Katie M Little adding another textural element to the track. Little’s vocal is ethereal and wanting encouraging the listener to let themselves go and be carried on this journey.
The production of the track as a whole is quite exact and polished, not surprising given that “You Oughta Love Me” has had the magic touch of well-known engineer Chris Harmer Smith (Thundandamentals, Hilltop Hoods) and was mastered by UK’s Mike Marsh (Bassment Jaxx, Depeche Mode). Timothy and the Apocalypse might allude to the world being on a dystopian path but even with the industrial and organic sound that Poulton’s music exudes, “You Oughta Love Me” still has a current of hope pulsing throughout.
