Auckland-based indie-pop trio LA WOMEN have shared their latest EP, Changed My Name. A project three years in the making, the EP is the result of LA WOMEN’s reinvention, transformation, and evolution since their arrival on the scene with their debut EP in 2018.

Consisting of a mix of family and childhood friends, frontman Jake Schdroski, drummer Zac Emerson, and bass player Jesse Brown, the Changed My Name EP tracks the progression of the bands brotherhood, growing from small-town New Zealand beginnings in their Masterton hometown to their sights set on the world.

Mirroring internal reflection in the EP’s abstract cover artwork, shot by Connor Lambertand drummer/creative director Zac Emerson, Changed My Name explores the idea of identity being an eternal evolution; looking at growth as a journey as opposed to a destination. The new EP’s title was conceived after the release of the bands first EP, before they had even begun work on the new project; setting themselves a challenge to create their most transformative project yet.

Accepting the challenge with open minds and eager determination, LA WOMEN began an evolutionary journey that started with stepping outside of their comfort zone both lyrically and musically. While their foundations lie in indie-pop, on the 8-track collection LA WOMEN expand their formula with the addition of funk, R&B, and jazz elements, opening up a whole new dimension to the bounds of their sound.

“We wanted this EP to be a natural evolution of our previous EP,” LA WOMEN say of the release. “We had the title ‘Changed My Name’ knocking around, and after exploring more what it meant to us as a band we found solace in it’s interpretation of us knowing it was okay to always be evolving sonically.”

A cohesive collection of songs complete with previously released anthemic singles “Daydreams”, “Blame Me”, and fan favourite ballad “Love Me”, the EP features three brand new offerings, as well as a stripped-back acoustic version of “Love Me”; its raw lyricism translating passionately to pure guitar form on the project’s closing track. A stellar showcase of the band’s instrumental progression, slow-burning indie-pop groove “Slow Down” is a meditative observation of the relentless pace of everyday life embellished with sophisticated saxophone, while “Overdue” explores the bittersweet emotions of a long-distance relationship over glimmering production in collaboration with Auckland producer duo Ambian & Sleo. Buttery melodies, pulsing percussion, and dainty chords shape the delicate atmosphere of final track “Perfect”, finding frontman Jake embracing his flaws on the comforting confessional co-written with R&B act, Mikey Dam.

The EP not only marks a new sense of musical identity for the band, but also an aesthetic overhaul encompassing their entire brand. With drummer Zac Emerson taking on the role of creative director, all of LA WOMEN’s graphics and visuals are handled in-house, creating a cohesive vision distinguishing the band’s next chapter – between the grungy, retro 70’s rock elements of their The Doors referencing namesake contrasted with the contemporary culture the band grew up with in small-town New Zealand.

Rooted in unabashed honesty, the Changed My Name collection represents radical growth by way of the vulnerability found in musical expression. While resonating nationwide as the endearing boys next door, the band have also made their mark in Australia touring in support of Glades, and have gained recognition from tastemakers including MTV, Complex UK, Happy Mag, Cool Accidents, Pilerats,SNIFFERS, Music Junkee, Amnplify and beloved national stations Triple R, FBi Radio, Radio Adelaide and more.

This summer, the band played peak festival sets including Rhythm & Vines, Soundsplash. The new EP arrives alongside LA WOMEN’s nationwide New Zealand co-headline tour with chart-topping Harper Finn this May. The band will take to the stage across Auckland, Wellington, Dunedin, and Christchurch.

On the rise in 2021, don’t miss the latest lush, groove-struck collection from LA WOMEN in Changed My Name, and escape into the cocktail of styles and genres that continue to shape the trio’s distinctive sound today.
