Pausing during the global pandemic and fast forwarding to 2021, and the legendary boy band from down under are back with more original music – a brand new EP set for release on May 21st through Sony Music Entertainment Australia. The GOOD GOOD LIFE EP is available to pre order now and will feature a new single also set for release on May 21st, Human Nature & Guy Sebastian, ‘Broken Humans’.

One of Australia’s finest musical exports, the impending release from Human Nature is their first collection of new original material since 2004’s Gold-certified WALK THE TIGHTROPE album. Although this set of songs – all of which were recorded before the global pandemic basically pressed pause on life – was originally scheduled for release last year. Andrew Tierney observes, “This feels like the right time to put the EP out. Things are gonna get better, so we’re kind of in the honeymoon period now of getting back out there and living our lives.”

When Human Nature’s brothers, Andrew and Mike Tierney, started song writing sessions for this EP, they hadn’t written a song together in 15 years. “When the songs started to come together it felt great,” Mike extols, “and it felt right for us as a group – where we are in our lives – and the sound of the music felt current as well; it didn’t feel like we were trying to fit in with what’s happening, it felt natural.”

“I’ve always said I wouldn’t wanna write something again unless I had something I wanted to say,” Andrew tells. “When Mike and I spoke about the tone of this EP, we agreed that we wanted to create positive, uplifting pop songs with a deeper message underneath to make people feel better about where they are and just kind of lift them up.”

Andrew has consistently exercised his passion for song writing over the years – recently penning original tunes for Human Nature‘s CHRISTMAS and JUKEBOX albums – but Mike stepped away from the process for a while. That is until the pair joined forces for these song writing sessions and immediately rediscovered their collaborative magic. “I started enjoying the whole song writing process again,” Mike enthuses. “We worked with some fantastic people as well. It was a great experience.”

“It was actually when Mike and I got back to writing together – that was really the start of this new body of work,” Andrew notes. “So it’s all come full circle.”

Three of the GOOD GOOD LIFE EP’s five tracks – Nobody Just Like You’, second single Broken Humans’ with Guy Sebastian and the title track – were produced by Grey, an American duo composed of Kyle and Michael Trewartha, and Planets’ was produced by Steven Solomon out of LA.

But Mike reveals that the catchy, empowering Don’t Lose Heart’ – created in Australia with the DNA song writing/production team – was the first song written for the GOOD GOOD LIFE EP“That was the first fully realised song that we wrote with another team,” he informs“and it felt great: a pop song with a powerful message.”

The remaining four GOOD GOOD LIFE EP tracks were written in a Las Vegas hotel room and Andrew remembers, Planets was the second song we wrote [for the EP] and then the rest of the songs came together quite quickly after that. We didn’t realise at the time that we would release a whole EP of new original material, but it all happened quite organically and so we knew that we were in the midst of something special.”

Toby concurs: “I think it’s testament to the songs as well, but because we’d been singing together so much – particularly over in Vegas – we were definitely better singers going into the recording sessions for this new music and everything sort of fell into place really easily. Because we were so excited to be approaching new original music again, that sort of brought a whole different level of energy to it. We really enjoyed the process.”

Described by Andrew as “a reminder for people that it’s okay to be broken, because we all are”, the second single to be lifted from the EP, ‘Broken Humans’, with Guy Sebastian’s vocal finesse. Sparse piano chords and percussive finger snaps gradually build within ‘Broken Humans’ cinematic arrangement before a gentle beat ushers in celestial harmonies to further elevate the chorus: “We’re broken humans/ There’s a world we all deserve/ Buried underneath the hurt/ Of being human.”

With its upbeat tempo and anthemic choruses, the GOOD GOOD LIFE EP’s title track promises euphoric moments within Human Nature’s future live shows. Although written pre-COVID, the lyrical content delivers a prescient message: I’ve been living for moments that I thought that I wantedBut if I’m being honest, it’s a wasted highSick of chasing a fortune that I can’t hold ontoI was broke when I met you… You’re the good good life.”

When asked whether his idea of what a GOOD GOOD LIFE looks like has changed since the release of this EP ’s lead single Nobody Just Like You’, Phil Burton shares“The whole COVID-19 situation has definitely really changed everyone’s perspective on what makes a ‘good good life’. I think just enjoying what you have in the moment and appreciating the gifts you have, your family and loved ones – they are the most important things in life. It’s about looking around and realising, ‘I have the ‘good good life’ right in front of me and it’s you!’”

Celebrating our significant others is a recurring theme throughout the GOOD GOOD LIFE EP, a stunning collection of feel-good pop songs. “I always used to worry about writing too many love songs. Even my Mum said, ‘Are you gonna be able to write anything other than love songs?’” Andrew laughs. And then when we were working on the Motown stuff with Smokey Robinson, he got asked the same question and he goes, ‘What else would you want to write about?’ And I thought, ‘That’s very good, I’m gonna take that!’ I mean, we wanna lift our fans up – we want them to enjoy themselves – and singing about love and positivity is the way to do it.”

“To feel like we can own the original music again is a nice place to be,” he continues. “As much as the fans love to hear our voices interpreting all these great Motown songs, I think they have a real desire to hear some new original material and hopefully we’re fulfilling that this year with the GOOD GOOD LIFE EP.”
