“Drink Alcohol”, the new song by up-and-coming artist SAMAS is a little pocket rocket of power that gives us a taster of his work before the imminent release of his self-titled debut EP.

SAMAS South Sydney roots permeate his music with its unrefined textures and frank laconic lyrics conveying a sense of urban poeticism. “Drink Alcohol” is the lead single and gives us a solid introduction into what makes SAMAS tick as a musician. A crackling post-punk track that is an anthem for the masses to live life fast and without regret. SAMAS suggests in a spirited way that we should down our poison if we want to and “live life fast as it might not last”. The song brims with youthful energy and bellows loudly like a sea shanty.

Utilising a simple set of chords and lyrics that show SAMAS’ keen eye of observation, the song reminds us of the simplicity of Elvis Costello and The Ramones. The production is an uncomplicated union between the guitars an insistent drum which is right on the money for this type of song. The result is a classic punk rock song exuding hedonistic annihilation that is fit for your favourite pub and shows that less can definitely deliver a lot more. Moreover, its infectious spirit means that before song’s end you’ll be singing along to the chorus.

SAMAS self-titled EP is due to be released on 18th June and promises to serve up songs that rumble with the same vigour as “Drink Alcohol”. SAMAS has been gigging regularly around Sydney playing in places like El Sol in Cronulla and Factory Theatre over in Marrickville. Taking into account their determined and voracious music and if “Drink Alcohol” is anything to go by, I bet a SAMAS live gig is an experience you wouldn’t forget in a short while.
