‘In 2019 I returned to Japan and had an urgency to film video footage at Jogashima Island for my music video even though the song wasn’t complete. I return to Japan almost every year but felt I had to record the clips then. 2020 showed me why I felt that urgency’ – Anita Levy

Anita Levy is a world-maker and her new single “Thief” is evidence that of that. She is herself literally a child of the world having being born in Japan to an Australian mother and Kiwi mother, then later spending part of her youth in Brazil before settling in Melbourne in 2011. These influences have rooted themselves within the artist resulting in a style that sounds almost mythic and with “Thief” she paints in broad brushstrokes a world of sonic textures that beckons the listener in.
From the beginning, “Thief” booms with the drama of a thunderstorm rolling from the horizon into shore. “Thief’s” journey began in 2017 when Levy was assaulted in Sao Paulo, Brazil. A frightening experience that later caused Levy to reflect on the incident. “After feeling the shock of having things stolen from me I was just grateful I was ok. That made me think about when things happen to you that are unfair, and how life isn’t fair. But something has to be fair, I thought.” The song holds the listener’s attention with a bold confidence that is shown by Levy’s strong choices in the arrangement. Also, the singer’s elegant and feathery vocals make the song soar as Levy explores the idea that ultimately we are all in charge of maintaining our personal power.
The addition of taiko drums, the layering of her vocals and the unique clapping rhythms imbues the song with a theatrical vibe that is not unlike other art-pop artists like Kate Bush. With “Thief”, Levy has produced a song that is beautifully arranged and flexes itself with its distinct motifs. With a release date of 28th May, “Thief” is a worthy song that deserves attention from an artist who is making some strong creative and striking choices.
‘Thief’ will be in Digital Stores on the 28th of May
