About MELBOURNE RECITAL CENTRE: RUN, SING, FLY
Duo Eclettico explores music inspired by the natural world and the intrinsic relationship between nature and humankind. Contemporary artists Takashi Yoshimatsu and Jane Hammond send us into the skies with works that ponder the plight of birds and their natural habitats.
Hammond’s poignant new work and premiere 10-minute performance is an elegy to critically engendered native Victoria birds, with a focus on the Helmeted Honeyeater in the Yellingbo Reserve in the 50th anniversary of this bird being declared the Victorian State’s avifaunal emblem. Takashi Yoshimatsu’s virtuosic Fuzzy Bird Sonata is a famous example of his inventive spirit.
These two works share a powerful message about the environment and are brilliantly paired with William Albright’ Sonata. While internationally renowned as a staple for saxophone and piano, Albrights monumental work has not been performed in Melbourne until now. Fusing traditional Baroque and modern jazz techniques, it is certain to set emotions and minds a flutter.

JANE HAMMOND’S ‘SONGS FROM THE BOX AND SWAMP’
and
ROSS EDWARDS ‘FULL MOON DANCES’
Come in and see this performance or watch live at home on stream
Jane Hammond’s piece Songs from the Box and Swamp has two versions, a 10 minute “concert versión” for soprano saxophone and a 40-minute theatrical version for soprano saxophone, piano, percussion, and narrator. The 10-minute versión is being premiered at Melbourne Recital Centre on May 26 in the Run, Sing, Fly, program.
The 40-minute versión is being premiered at fortyfivedownstairs over July 15 and 16. Here Duo Eclettico will pair it with Ross Edwards’ large-scale piece Full Moon Dances.
Saxophonist Justin Kenealy and pianist Coady Green are joined by percussionist Peter Neville to present the world premiere of Songs from the Box and Swamp by award winning composer Dr. Jane Hammond.
The Helmeted Honeyeater was made the avifaunal emblem for Victoria in 1971. Once a thriving species, the Helmeted Honeyeater’s numbers plummeted to a low of 50 individuals due to the destruction of their habítate after colonisation. A team of citizen conservationists at Yellingbo Reserve have worked with scientists for fifty years to bring the “HeHo” numbers back up to 250, but the bird is still critically endangered. Jane’s new work, with text by acclaimed director and writer Theresa Borg, tells the story of these birds, their habitat and the people who work to keep them alive, and the rich indigenous backdrop to this narrative. The work is accompanied by rare film footage taken by wildlife photographer and film maker Angus Hamilton who has been given unique access to the habitat.
Hammond’s new work is perfectly paired with Ross Edwards’ vibrant saxophone concerto in a new arrangement for saxophone, piano and percussion, Full Moon Dances. Here Ross depicts the universal Moon Goddess incarnate, source of plant life and protector of the environment, performing a series of ritual healing ceremonies.

AMNPLIFY – DB
My nickname is “The Amnplifier”. Why? Because around here my focus is on being a conduit for providing greater outcomes that people come here for. My day to day “work” is living in the moment, and I love helping others concentrate on finding their connection to themselves through their experiences.
Why start a music environment? The truth is I love music, I love writing, and I love life. I work with musicians every day, and I feel certain that I will be until they put me in the ground. I have been managing people in businesses of some sort for over thirty five years so along the way I have developed some “wisdom” from my regular and constant “observations”.
Amnplify your experience. That is what we want you to do here, and if you want to let me know why you do, or don’t, shoot me a message on Facebook.
Hope you enjoy yourself here and find something that hits you somewhere.
