ARIA & BET nominated rapper and artist Tkay Maidza today unleashes the third and final release in her Last Year Was Weird EP series. The vinyl edition of Last Year Was Weird, Vol. 3 will follow on 10 December and is now available to pre-order. For more information check HERE
Produced by long-time collaborator Dan Farber, Last Year Was Weird, Vol. 3 represents the culmination of a 3-year-long, 24 song-strong exploration of Maidza’s own Zimbabwean-Australian experience, and an evolution to fully realising and embracing her artistic versatility spanning everything from pop to trap, hip-hop and alt-R&B. Exuding confidence and sophisticated soundscapes, the latest EP encompasses eight diverse tracks that perfectly counterbalance for a thrilling finale to the highly-acclaimed trilogy.
The ethereal, piano-led entrance of “Eden” bends between Tkay’s sublime R&B vocals and tight rap flows, scaling into a slinky collaboration with UMI for “On To Me”. “So Cold” brings a body-moving pace to the fold with essences of funk, before harder-hitting cuts “Syrup”, “Kim” with Yung Baby Tate and “High Beams” surrender to Tkay’s explosive energy and commanding presence. As the introspective future-R&B and plush neo-soul of “Cashmere” meet a moment of peace in “Breathe” at the close, Tkay reflects on the personal and professional journey underlying the Last Year Was Weird era, while gazing upon the bright future her ambition has shaped.

Tkay says of the EP: “Last Year Was Weird, Vol. 3 is the final chapter of the trilogy – I am so excited but it’s also bittersweet, this last chapter is about accepting what it is and stepping into that power and really letting go of anything that’s hindering my path. It feels like a life cycle and a lesson that’s come and gone quickly and I’m grateful for the people I’ve met on the way. I feel like I’ve really come to realise that I’ve always had what I needed I just needed to see it clearly. And Last Year Was Weird has helped me do that. A lot of the songs feel like a mixture of the first two but are at their brightest and boldest as well because I understand now where I can exist – which was the point of this trilogy. I’m excited for what’s next.”
On the road to Last Year Was Weird, Vol. 3, Tkay’s global presence has soared as she comes to form in the power of her own versatility. Collecting praise from PAPER, FADER, Nylon, i-D, MTV, NME, Pedestrian.TV, Rolling Stone and more, 2021 has seen momentous EP singles “Kim”, “Syrup” and “Cashmere” successfully chart her newest chapter, paired between with an additional celestial cover of Pixies classic “Where Is My Mind?”. Prior, Tkay Maidza wrapped a stratospheric 2020 that propelled the Zimbabwe-born, Australia-raised artist to new heights. From billboards in Times Square and Downtown LA, to features in Pitchfork and Vogue and a placement on the FIFA Soundtrack, her Last Year Was Weird, Vol. 2 EP presented a compelling new stride, going on to collect an ARIA-nomination for Best Soul/R&B Release and win Best Record at Rolling Stone Australia Awards.

Keeping the momentum, Tkay will also hit mega US festivals All Things Go (alongside HAIM, St Vincent, Charli XCX + more) and Day N Vegas (alongside Tyer, The Creator, Kendrick Lamar, Doja Cat, SZA + more).
Crafting a multi-faceted universe of her own, Tkay Maidza now shares the final piece of the puzzle in her thrilling development as one of the country’s brightest exports. Having shaped a distinct reputation for eclectic and unsuspecting avant-garde sound over the course of three ambitious EPs, the world now watches as Tkay takes her spotlight with Last Year Was Weird, Vol. 3.

AMNPLIFY – DBA
My nickname is “The Amnplifier”. Why? Because around here my focus is on being a conduit for providing greater outcomes that people come here for. My day to day “work” is living in the moment, and I love helping others concentrate on finding their connection to themselves through their experiences.
Why start a music environment? The truth is I love music, I love writing, and I love life. I work with musicians every day, and I feel certain that I will be until they put me in the ground. I have been managing people in businesses of some sort for over thirty five years so along the way I have developed some “wisdom” from my regular and constant “observations”.
Amnplify your experience. That is what we want you to do here, and if you want to let me know why you do, or don’t, shoot me a message on Facebook.
Hope you enjoy yourself here and find something that hits you somewhere.
