Georgia James’ Brisbane roots take hold in her second single “On Top” which is a potent melancholic rock song oozing with simmering feminine power.
“On Top” marks a slight divergence for the artist from her debut single “Start A War” with James’ creative focus being trained on exploring the grungier aspects of her music whilst not limiting herself to just one genre. In fact, James finds herself intrigued by all types of contemporary music including powerful blues singers from the 1950s which you can hear bubbling through “On Top”. The song sounds like it harks back to legendary female bands with her vibe giving off strong Shirley Manson (Garbage) vocals, think vulnerability but with a jagged thin edge of seductive anger. James describes “On Top” as the kind of song everyone can relate to. “We have all been in a situation where you know the relationship is toxic and bad for you but you can’t seem to let it go.”

She’s not wrong there, the relenting fuzzy guitars sound like a warning as James coolly describes a toxic relationship that messed her up but one she stayed in far too long. It’s almost as if her frustration is directed at herself rather than her ex-partner. The emotional intensity of the song and her play on words in the lyrics reminds me of the early days of Little Birdy. Quiet enticing verses that lull you in a false sense of security before the onslaught of a biting chorus.
“On Top” was recorded at in Brisbane at Sound Out Studios in May 2021 under Casper Halls production skills. It has elements of that classic Brisbane sound that we love, rock that feels a little more messy and organic. James has mentioned that people will find this song therapeutic to scream the lyrics to in their cars. She’s not wrong there, “On Top’s” energy is a force of nature that will sweep you away. Along with “On Top” James promises more releases this year so keep an eye on this exciting powerful singer.
