Have you always wanted to be a musician? When did you get the song writing bug?
I’ve wanted to be a musician since birth! From dancing to Thriller when I was a child to my first national singing contest. The songwriting bug came a bit later, I started when I was 13 or 14 to write with my little band Emyspherio in Valencia, Venezuela. I remember loving Aterciopelados, Cafe Tacuba and Shakira. All the people we later on opened for.
How would you describe your sound? Why do you think people resonate with your music?
I say my sound is a lot of Latin, a little rock, a little rap and a little Flamenco y Joropo to heal the soul and make it roar. I think it’s mostly because you can hear it was made with love. Every word, sound and melody has been thought out within my universe of creative chaos.
Which artist’s music and/or performance, past or present, inspires you today?
I’m going to summon up a weird combo you’ll love! Sia’s writing, Bruno’s sauce and insane sound, Beyoncé’s showmanship, Prince’s soul, Whitney’s vocal dexterity.
Your new single ‘Zoom Zoom’ with DFRNS has come out recently on BB Music Group! Describe its origin and evolution.
It’s my ode to the queens out there who experience bad relationships and endure putting up with narcissists, to end up getting cheated on! It’s about coming out on top after all that, and getting theirs in the end. I wrote this track about a year and a half ago. Different music and different producer, someone who lacked the imagination I sought after. That meant I needed to wait with this heat for a year before I found DFRNS, many sessions and messages and hours of work later, it became what it is today!
.
.
Not only are you an artist, but you are the A&R at BB Music Group. How to you balance artist life with label life? How did you find yourself working at BB Music Group?
What life? Lol I’m happiest when I’m busy, and though it’s true that right now I often get overwhelmed or forget to eat or relax. I work side by side with the man I love and CEO of BB Music Group, the Robin Hood label for musicians and songwriters like me who need someone to believe in them and yearn to create and still own their work.
Is there an EP or Album on the drawing board?
There is so much going on, I wish I could be even more specific, but for now… MARIA my biggest track ever is coming out in September and at least 3 albums in Spanish in the next couple of years + a few more in English, that and some insane collabs on the horizon for sure!
If you could perform with any music artist, Alive or Dead, who would you choose? And why?
Beyoncé, cuz she’s da sh*t! Lol I mean, really, hot damn…!!!
What is the best thing about performing to a live audience? What’s been the career highlight so far?
I’ve the pleasure to perform for huge audiences, but nothing can beat the energy I got from performing on the main stage at the Dam in Amsterdam during Gay Pride 2018. There was so much you could levitate!!

Exuding a powerful presence from the get-go, ‘Zoom Zoom’ employs a thumping bassline and groove-inducing instrumentals. Bursting with energy and flavour, Emy Perez’s sultry Spanish vocals keep the listener captivated across its duration, and work in perfect harmony with DFRNS’ Reggaeton rhythms. An ode to the strong Queens out there, ‘Zoom Zoom’ is an empowering anthem about difficult breakups, but finding the power to rise above and take back control.
Writing alongside some of the world’s most celebrated producers and artists, including Willy William (Mi Gente), will.i.am, Steve Morrison and Phil Greiss, Emy Perez has also performed around the globe with musical icons including Shakira, Eros Ramazzotti and Earth, Wind & Fire. Releasing her first solo record in March 2021, ‘Over You’ was placed in the Top 20 New Music Friday NL and her debut Spanish EP ‘Dime’ was released on Armada Music alongside Pablo Nouvelle. Encapsulating her passion and larger than life personality in her craft, Emy manages to create timeless and top quality productions, no matter the genre.
DFRNS (pronounced Difference) consists of Amsterdam natives Hidde Huijsman & Massimo Cacciapuoti, who have skyrocketed as an artist-breaking production duo in contemporary Pop and R&B/Hip-Hop/Reggaeton music over the last few years. Their dynamic sound comprises synth-driven, melodically innovative song arrangements and trunk rattling beats. Earlier this year, 5 x Grammy Award-winning producer Kuk Harrell (Beyoncé, Rihanna, Justin Bieber, Usher, Jennifer Lopez) discovered DFRNS, which resulted in their first major placement on Republic Records with ‘Your Loss I’m Found’ by Jessie J. Adding their magic touch to ‘Zoom Zoom’, listeners will be left wanting more from this dream team.
