Music SA is thrilled to announce that Umbrella Festival, which was sadly paused due to South Australia’s 7-day lockdown, will pick up where it left off with live music performances across the State resuming from Friday 30 July and now extending until Sunday 17 October.

After a hiatus in 2020, the annual winter celebration of live music was set to feature 294 performances (170 events) across 38 different contemporary music genres in 85 venues across Adelaide’s CBD, metropolitan suburbs and South Australia’s regional areas including the Eyre Peninsula, the Barossa, the Adelaide Hills and the Fleurieu Peninsula.

Throughout the 7-day lockdown period, over 80 live music performances across 40 venues were cancelled, including the majority of Umbrella’s curated program. A total of 27 events have been completely cancelled, with approximately 60 events rescheduling to a later date across the extended festival period. The financial impact that this has caused across the state is yet to be determined and is currently being worked through between Music SA, venues and event producers. Full list of cancelled and rescheduled performances affected HERE.

In the meantime, Music SA is calling on all affected artists, producers and venues to fill out the latest I Lost My Gig survey which tracks the impact of cancelled gigs and lost income across the nation which has recorded a $345 million loss for the live entertainment industry for mid-2020 alone.

Music SA General Manager Kim Roberts is pleased that the final 12 days of the festival can continue, albeit with limited venue capacities, as well as extending throughout October.

“We are so thrilled for Umbrella to return after this week-long pause, but we’re absolutely devastated that 80 performances were unable to proceed, especially after the year the Australian live music industry faced in 2020. The pause of the festival was really difficult for us to be faced with only five days into 2021 Umbrella, but the safety of our team, our venues, performers and audiences is our first priority.”

She continues: “The Music SA team have been working hard on delivering Umbrella over the past 18 months, putting as many contingencies in place as possible to adhere to social distancing requirements. Now we’re working closely with our many artists, venues and producers to ensure that as many Umbrella events as possible are rescheduled to a later date.”

Music SA Chair Anne Wiberg states “We’re grateful that we can continue with Umbrella through until mid-October in a COVID-safe format. But this has truly been another blow to artists, venues and a hardworking team who have been faced with so many challenges over the past 18 months. We can’t stress that enough.”

As Umbrella Festival is an open-access event (open for all to participate in), the festival itself does not directly sell tickets to events. Ticketholders are encouraged to check the Umbrella website for current event information. For events that have been cancelled or postponed, ticketholders are advised to contact the event’s ticket platform for more details. Music SA is working with Umbrella venues, artists and promoters to support them through these changes. All other updates about Umbrella Festival will be communicated via the Music SA and Umbrella Festival websites, social media and also email correspondence over the next week.

Umbrella Festival 2021 has been extended until Sunday 17 October 2021.
