Album Highlights: 

#1: Lil Nas X ‘MONTERO’ – American star Lil Nas X debuts at #1 on the ARIA Albums Chart with MONTERO. It’s the first album from the pop-rap artist, who first rose to prominence when ‘Old Town Road’ spent 13 weeks at #1 on the Singles Chart in 2019. It becomes his second entry on the Albums Chart, having made his debut with 7 EP (#5 Jul. ’19). MONTERO includes three Top Ten singles: ‘Montero (Call Me By Your Name)’ (#1 Apr. ’21), ‘Industry Baby’ (#5 Aug. ’21) and ‘Thats What I Want’ (#7 this week). The album features appearances from Elton John, Doja Cat, Jack Harlow, Megan Thee Stallion and Miley Cyrus.

#2: Vika and Linda ‘The Wait’ – Melbourne duo Vika and Linda score their third Top Two debut in two years as they release The Wait. The seventh studio album from the Bull sisters is their first album of originals since 2002’s Love Is Mighty Close. It includes tracks written by Bernard Fanning, Don Walker, Paul Kelly, Kasey Chambers, Augie March’s Glenn Richards, The Living End’s Chris Cheney and more. The pair have also charted in the last 18 months ‘Akilotoa (Anthology 1994-2006) (#1 Jun. ’20) and Sunday (The Gospel According To Iso) (#2 Sept. ’20).

#8: Spiritbox ‘Eternal Blue’ – Spiritbox makes their first appearance in the ARIA Top Ten as they debut at #8 with Eternal Blue. Formed in 2016, the Canadian metalcore band released two EPs prior to their debut album. Eternal Blue has debuted at #1 on this week’s ARIA Vinyl Albums Chart.

#13: Lachy Doley ‘Studios 301 Sessions’ – Hammond organ and whammy clavinet maestro Lachy Doley hits the chart at #13 with the live album Studios 301 Sessions. Recorded across two sets at the famed Sydney recording facility, the album features performances from Mahalia Barnes and Karen Lee Andrews, as well as a 14 piece band. Doley’s only other Top 50 entry was with Lovelight (#40 Jan. ’17).

#16: NCT 127 ‘Sticker’ – K-pop group NCT 127 take out their first ARIA Top 50 entry as they debut at #16 with Sticker. The boy band’s third Korean-language studio album (and fourth album overall) comes 18 months on from previous album, Neo Zone. NCT 127 are a nine-member sub-unit of the group NCT, which contains 23 members.

#1: The Kid Laroi & Justin Bieber ‘Stay’ – ‘Stay’ by The Kid Laroi and Justin Bieber holds #1 on the ARIA Singles Chart for an eleventh straight week. Other singles to have spent the same amount of time at #1 include Bryan Adams’ ‘Everything I Do (I Do It For You)’ (1991), Spice Girls’ ‘Wannabe’ (1996/97), Drake’s ‘God’s Plan’ (2018), The Weeknd’s ‘Blinding Lights’ (2020) and 24kGoldn’s ‘Mood’ (2020).

#4: Lil Nas X & Jack Harlow ‘Industry Baby’ – As Lil Nas X’s debut album MONTERO hits #1 this week, the American pop-rap hits a new peak at #4 with ‘Industry Baby’, one spot above its previous high. There are three tracks from MONTERO in this week’s Top Ten: ‘Thats What I Want’ debuts at #7, and the album’s title track has jumped back up ten spots to sit at #9.

#17: The Anxiety ‘Meet Me At Our Spot’ – A week on from debuting at #27, ‘Meet Me At Our Spot’ by American duo The Anxiety climbs ten spots to hit #17. It takes the single one spot higher than the peak reached by group member Willow Smith’s ‘Whip My Hair’ (#18 Jan. ’11).

#23: CKay ‘Love Nwantiti (Ah Ah Ah)’ – Nigerian singer/songwriter CKay makes his ARIA Top 50 debut with ‘Love Nwantiti (Ah Ah Ah)’. First released in 2019, the track has picked up pace in the last year thanks to TikTok and a number of remixes, charting across Europe, plus Canada, New Zealand and Singapore.

#28: Taylor Swift ‘Wildest Dreams (Taylor’s Version)’ – Continuing the release of re-recordings of her back catalogue, Taylor Swift debuts at #28 with ‘Wildest Dreams (Taylor’s Version)’. It’s an update of the track from 1989 (#1 Nov. ’14) that peaked at #3 in September 2015.
