24-year-old Mexican indie star Silvana Estrada has released the new single “Tristeza.” On the song, Silvana confronts the stubborn cloud of sadness that paralyzed her post-love affair, letting the music free her.

‘Tristeza’ is probably the most therapeutic of all my compositions,” she explains. “I drew inspiration from the idea of ‘magical thinking’. I believe it’s the first song where I assimilate my loss and ask to be healed. Also, it was the first song that I composed right after moving to México City, where at arrival, I felt depressed, scared and ill at ease. I missed the countryside and everything was pushing me towards change and uncertainty. Of all the songs, this is the one that experienced the moststudio ‘construction’. It was always comforting to return to work on it as it possesses a feeling not heard on the rest of the record. It is filled with light. We incorporated a ‘jarana’ and doubled my voice with Diego Franco’s saxophone. We later added a mantra-like chorus which infused us all with peace.”

“Tristeza” is accompanied by a cinematic music video filmed in Valle Nuevo, Dominican Republic and directed by Karla Read and Edwin Erazo. In the video, water is an ever-present element in which Silvana is navigating. It cleanses but it does not go away, like sadness.

“Tristeza” follows the recent single “Marchita” which was spotlighted in The New York Times “Playlist” and NPR “Weekend Edition.” “Marchita” came to Silvana after falling in love for the first time, and a breakup that ultimately led her to embrace herself and fiercely defend her own unique voice. Silvana talks about the withering of what was, but finally, the sprouting of something new.

Silvana has already been hailed as “one of Mexico’s greatest young talents and vocalists” by KCRW’s José Galvan. She has performed and recorded with artists including Natalia Lafourcade, who like Silvana, grew up outside Veracruz as well as Uruguayan singer/songwriter Jorge Drexler and Chile’s Mon Laferte.

A multi-instrumentalist, Silvana most often plays the Venezuelan cuatro guitar, whose small body and warm sound suits her hands and syncs with the rolling variations of her vocals. Raised singing Mexican son jarocho and baroque choir music, and schooled in jazz, she is an iconoclast who dismisses musical trends for a personal, poetic style that goes straight to the heart of listeners. “My music is made of who I am,” she says.

Silvana grew up in a house where not only music, but instruments, were made. Both of her parents are luthiers, and a path was worn to their home in Coatepec, a mountain town in Veracruz, by the musicians who arrived daily to commission a new violin or cello, or have their instruments repaired.

Silvana will embark on her first U.S. tour beginning next week, as an opener for Rodrigo y Gabriela. She recently toured extensively across Spain, including prestigious festivals from La Mar de Musicas to Jardins Pedralbes as well as iconic locations like the Palacio Real in Madrid.
