How did the band come together? Is there someone who is a “driving force”, or do you all make decisions together?
Blood Red Throne was started by me (Daniel aka Død) in 1998 and I’ve been in the band all the time. I also write most of the music. I’m definitely a driving force and so-called boss, but I couldn’t do this without the rest of my guys. Anyway, there’s been some line-up changes during the years, but the current one, except bass player, has been steady for the longest and we are in a good place now for a long time.
You are labelled a death metal band but how would you describe your sound? Why do you think people resonate with your music?
Death metal is correct. I would say old-school, but modern production and more melodic leads. Groove is very important to us. Just kick ass metal that gives you that bad-ass face!
Which artist’s music and/or performance, past or present, inspires you today?
My all time fave band and musician is Chuck Schuldiner of Death. You will also find a lot of Joe Satriani inspired leads. And the groove from Pantera. I definitely like the 90’s death metal more than anything. That decade was magic!
.
.
Your new album Imperial Congregation has just been released! Describe its origin and evolution.
It’s our 10th album and definitely our most well-done. All songs are very catchy and contains all the elements we want to incorporate. Right from the very first riff, I knew this one would take us to the next level. Bolt also made the lyrics and vocals pretty fast and the whole album just came natural. My main goal was to write the best death metal songs ever and have a killer production. I think we succeeded!
Do you have a favourite track on the album and if so, why?
It has to be Itika. It has that driving groove combined with brutality. This one is somewhat fresh and brings something new to the table. I really like the chuggin’ riffs and it’s so fuckin heavy and groovy. It seems like the audience also like this one a lot!
Are there any tours or events coming up soon? What are you looking forward to, and what can the fans expect?
Offers keep coming and many of the festivals supposed to happen in 2020/21, will finally take place in 2022. We are looking for a European tour, but we will also come back to the US and South America. Our biggest dream is to play in Asia and Australia, cause we have never been there and now it’s time!
.
.
How has COVID affected you to date? What have you introduced to balance the losses from missed events?
To be honest, it’s been good to have a break from it all. Plenty of time to write and record music and for me personally I’ve spent a lot of time on sports. Pandemic doesn’t affect us anyway in regards of rehearsing or recording music. The band haven’t rehearsed in a decade and I write and record all music in my home studio. We only gathered once to shoot the music video. Anyway, the band is ready to team up again and spend a lot of time on the road in 2022!
If you could perform with any music artist, Alive or Dead, who would you choose? And why?
Chuck Schuldiner. I never got to see Death live and this choice is obvious cause his music has inspired me endlessly. I would also love to get some guitar lessons from Dimebag and Satriani!
The band has a great history of over 20 years and strong longevity, so do you have any further long-term aspirations as a music artist?
24 years to be precise. Our focus is to always deliver top notch death metal and keep building the band. We’re finally on the biggest metal label and future looks good!
.
.
What is the best thing about performing to a live audience? What’s been the career highlight so far?
Definitely see the fans going apeshit in the crowd and just feel the great vibe when they enjoy what we’re doing. It’s that perfect interaction between band and audience. 6 weeks in the states and the 70k Cruise are our highlights so far. More to come though.

The wait is over. Norway’s masters of death metal BLOOD RED THRONE have released their long-awaited 10th album Imperial Congregation via Nuclear Blast. The band celebrates the record’s arrival with the debut of a music video for their latest single, ‘Transparent Existence’. Check out the video and pick up your copy of Imperial Congregation now!
With over 25 years and 10 albums soon to be under their belt, BLOOD RED THRONE is dedicated to the continual delivery of straight forward, exceptional death metal with Imperial Congregation being no exception.
“This time around we’ve made something new and fresh in our sound. We felt it from the very first song that was written; this will take us to a whole different level in terms of arrangements, riffs, vocals… everything. We are super-excited to share this with our fans, and in cooperation with the greatest label ever,” says Olaisen.
Imperial Congregation delivers quality, old school sound while reflecting in part upon the self-righteous nature of humanity and its incessant need to destroy itself through power, ignorance and religion.
“We live outside this system,” explains Olaisen. “We don’t join in on the sheep mentality. Create your own possibilities, be responsible for your own misery or success!”
The haunting, organic album artwork was designed by the infamous Marcelo Vasco. The image displays a flock of old, religious men as they meet in secrecy to design the laws of lower society.
“Many of our lyrics deal with our skepticism of religion, and of mankind in general. Be free or be dead,” says Olaisen. “Two gigantic skeletons tower over the men of worship as they dictate human fate by candlelight.”
