In these times when our lives have become either more complicated or simpler iNTERMITENT is an artist that looks to create music that embraces methods of production that utilises, what is available in the environment around him, and his sound shines with flavours of roots and alt-indie rock. New single ‘Seventh’ is a bold example of this organic approach.
iNTERMITENT is the nom de plume of Aussie artist J-M. He’s what you could describe as a one-man band writing, playing and recording his music. “Seventh” was mixed by ARIA award-winning Lachlan Goold (Midnight Oil), but everything else was by J-M’s hand. The singer believes that sustainability extends to all things including music-making. “Seventh” is a spritely song that at its heart is an indie-rock track but within that structure lies a few nods to other contemporaries such as John Butler and even Filter. Refined acoustic guitars remind us of that early 2000s sound but the commentary lyrics also show that J-M is drawn to the earnest writing style and arrangements of 1960s folk rock.
“Seventh” challenges the listener to examine themselves as J-M does. The song acknowledges that inequities and hypocrisy exists in our society. However, J-M acknowledges that facing our own contradictions may not be an easy task but is in the end a rewarding one. “I keep my head up high, while the world lights up again. And the hardest part is to face the darkness within.” In composing the song J-M searched out instruments that were either gifts or borrowed from friends and family. “Seventh” was recorded in special spaces curated with thick blankets and ladders or whatever was at hand. The result of this back to basics approach to recording gives the song warmth and the result is quite top-notch.
