Perth’s End Of Fashion will continue their hot streak of singles with the release of Wake Up on January 1st complemented by a launch at the Rosemount Hotel on January 8th.

The new single follows on the heels of Ruby Lips, a song that recalled the beloved rock swagger of early End Of Fashion.

“Ruby Lips has already become a crowd pleaser,” singer/guitarist Justin Burford notes. “You just can’t beat rock’n’roll.”

Wake Up, meanwhile, revels a little more in the pop realm. It’s a space that Burford is more than happy to occupy these days.

“It’s definitely pop,” he says, “but I think I’ve always been a pop songwriter. I’m just more inclined to lean into it these days. I think that songwriting and good little tunes are at the core of what the band has always been about.

“We’re all really happy with Wake Up because where Ruby Lips was more aligned with the traditional pop/rock we were doing 10-15 years ago, Wake Up still has all of those hallmarks of an End Of Fashion song, but it’s a little bit more summery. It’s not the ‘heavy metal Beatles’ that we’ve been described as. It’s getting away from that straight rock thing and has more of an indie flavour.”

Recorded and mixed with old friend and collaborator Andy Lawson at Perth’s Debaser Studio, Wake Up as a song arrives in an uncertain era, when all sort of calls to arms are forthcoming from all aspects of media and all kinds of voices.

“Wake Up definitely has a message for me,” Burford says, “but I never like to get too specific. I don’t want to cut somebody out of potentially enjoying the song if it’s not necessarily directed at them.

“I don’t think you’d have to look too far into the lyrics to see where I’m getting at. ‘It’s a long way down from your ivory tower; Every dog has its day, and this is your eleventh hour’. The bigger you are the harder you fall, and I think there’s change in the air.”

Whatever you make of it, however, Wake Up is wrapped up in an all-consuming and uplifting chorus. The good times are still here to roll.

“That’s one of the things I really enjoy about writing pop songs is that you can tackle hard issues and still get across a sense of optimism,” Burford explains. “I think it’s something we are desperately in need of in these sorts of times.”
