Michael Butera’s latest single and ode to following the path least traversed, “On My Way” is a giddy explosion of barely contained happiness like a confetti gun that’s been let off in the middle of a party much to everyone’s childlike glee.
Butera, the Melbourne based singer/songwriter, had until recently been making inroads for his career in North America, working steadily and releasing several songs that got traction across US streaming platforms and radio stations. In 2018 Butera made his way back to Melbourne and “On My Way” must encapsulate much of the spirit of Butera’s journey. The song is bright and upbeat beginning with the repetitive chant of “I’m On My Way” before Butera tells us of the liberation he feels in trusting himself to the unknown as he journeys to the horizon. “I have no idea what’s coming but I won’t turn around, ‘cause I’m brought back to life. I’m on my way to find my own adventure.”

Rhythmic clapping and punchy percussive drums parts uplift the song to the level of an anthemic chant that is carried away with plucky guitar riffs. There’s no denying, it’s seriously catchy stuff and serves as an example of what bright indie-pop ideally should sound like. The production is very slick creating a pristine sonic soundscape, it also hints that Butera’s time in the US collaborating with a number of artists (including Celine Dion’s brother Jacques Dion) has given him a keen understanding of how to deliver the complete package when it comes to a pop song.
Butera delivers “On My Way” with the same strong gusto as a Bastille or Imagine Dragons song. Whilst the song climbs with determination to a heady height, Butera meters the sentiment by acknowledging that life consists of the ups and downs, the good and bad in turn highlighting that this is the beauty of what makes life living.
