Sometimes a song comes along and it’s got so much refinement and swagger you think, “Is this for real? This is actually a debut song?” Yet singer/songwriter Tamsyn appears to be on a mission to surprise, if not with the quiet confidence she exudes in her new song, “Delicate” then with the laidback, sultry mood she creates. You may not have heard of Tamsyn, but with this track, she’s inviting you to take a seat and find out a little more.

“Delicate” is a personal song to Tamsyn that she crafted along with her best friend Rhiannon Mallet during a writing session. The Queensland singer, who came to Australia via Cape Town, South Africa, dipped into her own experiences for “Delicate’s” themes of narcissism and love. “The song came from a place of arguably justified anger after an incident of disrespect.” Further to this as Tamsyn croons with the timbre of a Katy Steele “You keep looking in the mirror instead of me”, the song touches on the grievances of being in a relationship with someone who seems more concerned for themselves than for their partner.

Tamsyn blends her alt-folk vocal style with a bluesy rhythm in a slow tempo, the arrangement’s relaxed vibe belies the bubbling anger of Tamsyn’s lyrics. An electric guitar that piques at certain points before reverberating like a warning makes the song feel like it’s tinged with danger. A self-awareness and demand for respect resonants from the song and it’s interesting to try to figure out if the song is a warning to a lover or if the ties have already been severed.

Those who love rich and atmospheric alt-folk will find it hard not to fall for “Delicate”, it harks back to the alt-indie songs of Mazzy Star and Angus and Julia Stone.
