“It’s creatively dense, life-affirming, and unlike any other record, you’ll hear this year. It’s the sound of them reaching for greatness. And boy, do they achieve it.” – triple j

“It’s big music. It might even be lifesaving.” – The Australian

“Sonically, the album expands on Gang Of Youths’ typically propulsive, Titus Andronicus-meets-Springsteen stompers with unexpected forays into ’90s house, trip-hop, UK garage, Afrobeat and disco on the sublime Tend The Garden, as well as Le’aupepe’s Pasifika heritage through the use of Maori choirs, traditional instrumentation, and samples from the recordings of ethnomusicologist David Fanshawe” – The Age

“Gang Of Youths have crafted some of their finest work so far.” – NME Australia

“As a whole, angel in realtime. manages to transcend the events that inspired it to create a cohesive, accessible whole. On one hand, it’s an impressive document that allows fans to delve deep into the story of Le’aupepe’s father as he invites them in and shares the impressive tale, but on the other, it stands tall as a powerful record that works even without context.”– Rolling Stone Australia

“Brimming with optimism, guts and heart” – Billboard

“A 77-minute maximalist rock opus…It’s their best record yet.
One that sets them up for greater success to come.” –
SPIN

“People throw around the word “cinematic” a lot when discussing music, but rarely has an album played out so much like a movie, from its sprawling mythology to its steep emotional stakes.”– STEREOGUM

“Every single song and video that Gang Of Youths have released thus far from their upcoming album, Angel In Realtime, has been a triumphant and downright cathartic statement on loss and grieving.”– UPROXX

After hitting Number 1 on the ARIA Album Charts and Top 10 in the UK chart with their critically acclaimed third studio album new album ‘angel in realtime.’, Gang Of Youths have just completed their sold out UK tour,  which included their biggest show to date in London at O2 Academy Brixton. Today the band share their first Amazon Original, an orchestral version of the album’s centrepiece ‘spirit boy’, available exclusively on Amazon Music.

Already a moving paean to frontman Dave Le’aupepe’s late father, the emotional majesty of this new version of
‘spirit boy’ is elevated by the band’s collaboration with lead orchestrator Rosie Danvers, whose previous credits include Adele, Coldplay and Kanye West. Building upwards from the plaintive sorrow of Le’aupepe’s opening words, their stately strings and beautifully beguiling brass accentuate the song’s cathartic release. It’s an accompaniment that dramatically enhances the song’s whole-hearted final flourish after Le’aupepe sings, “I wanna live like it’s worth something in time, I gotta give it time.”

As a song in which London is an essential part of its story, it’s fitting this orchestral version was recorded and filmed in AIR Studios, one of the capital’s most beautiful and storied studios.

Gang Of Youths commented, “It was truly a dream come true for us five to be invited to AIR studios to record one of our songs with such an extraordinary group of musicians; particularly working with Rosie Danvers and seeing her bring the song and its many parts to life in her orchestral arrangement. we are grateful for the opportunity.”

The original version of ‘spirit boy’ features on their recently released ‘angel in realtime.’ album. It’s a record that channels its emotional intensity and existential questions into an exploratory sonic tapestry that touches upon everything from Britpop and post-punk to American minimalism and contemporary classical.
