JOY. reflects on the single, “’Think About It’ is about forming a decision about a situation or difficult relationship. It’s a reflection of a dynamic connection with someone and trying to hold onto whatever is left. The aim of not giving up on it, all the while knowing you’ve been willingly blind to the fact things are broken. It was written in sections, years apart. It started as a piano ballad, but since taken on a different feeling with added instrumentation and a changed structure. It’s been written and recorded in all different parts of the world. Originally written in Sydney, the clip was recorded in New Zealand, the vocals in Los Angeles and instruments tracks on the central coast of New South Wales. The song changed meaning the more I wrote on it and the more experiences I had while doing so. Morphing many life events, into one story to think about.”
To coincide with the release, she has also shared the stunning clip shot in New Zealand and co-directed by Simon Morehead and Jack Toohey (Sure Studios).

Describing the clip JOY. says, “I was lucky to have the opportunity to head over to NZ in the tiny window our borders were open last year to shoot the clip for ’Think About It’ in Queenstown with a small crew.We didn’t have a specific plan but had a couple of days to just drive around looking for the most beautiful spots outside of Queenstown. I wanted the clip to feel cinematic, in the same way I had envisioned the song and New Zealand was really the perfect place for that. It was also really, really cold.”
Following on from a run of successful east coast shows in support of her recent singles ‘Alone On The Moon’, and ‘Out Of Love’, fans got to experience her new material for the first time. The EP is a transcendent journey through sounds and emotion; spring boarded lyrically through her introspection as a young woman, and musically through her obsession with sounds and mastering instruments.
2021’s release ‘Out Of Love’ showed us that the wait was well and truly worth it, with the single receiving major praise from media outlets, added to full rotation at triple j, sitting in the most played tracks for months as well as hitting the Top 200 Shazam Charts.
Describing the EP, JOY. says, “Portal is the EP I wish I had written as my first. Sonically I wanted to go back to my roots, playing guitar, piano, making ambient loops and somehow incorporate more live instrumentation elements back into my music. My aim for ‘Portal’ was to try and get back to the limitless feeling I had when I began playing music and writing. I wanted to find a bit more of that freedom in creating and incorporate it back into my process. It was all about playing and writing what felt right to me, I wanted to make music for the love of it and not follow specific instructions or structures.
It’s reminiscent of such a distinct moment in time for me. I usually work quite isolated and in my own realm so 2021 throughout lockdown I continued that, but in a way that was much more defined, and out of necessity not so much choice. I wrote new things every day, played tonnes of guitar and began piecing it all together. I was listening to a lot more grounded, grungy music, music with a lot of live instruments, more distorted sounds so I guess that influenced how ‘Portal’ was mapped out.
I wanted ‘Portal’ to feel like a journey from front to back, familiar themes but varying in textures. Something people could listen to as a body of work – not a collection of disparate tracks. Entering the ‘portal’ with the opener ‘Down’ and exiting it 30 mins later at the end of ‘House’, hopefully having been able to connect with some emotion or sound throughout. A place of feeling and time they can always come back to.”
JOY. the artist, like the emotion is for everyone. Her music doesn’t fit squarely into any genre, melding modern sounds with classic techniques to create something contemporary and timeless at the same time. A combination of ambience and pop, intending to take people on a somewhat spiritual journey through listening. Where she had previously written predominantly within her production software, JOY. has gone back to her roots by writing on keys and guitar, giving her music the most organic and classic sound to date.

My nickname is “The Amnplifier”. Why? Because around here my focus is on being a conduit for providing greater outcomes that people come here for. My day to day “work” is living in the moment, and I love helping others concentrate on finding their connection to themselves through their experiences.
Why start a music environment? The truth is I love music, I love writing, and I love life. I work with musicians every day, and I feel certain that I will be until they put me in the ground. I have been managing people in businesses of some sort for over thirty five years so along the way I have developed some “wisdom” from my regular and constant “observations”.
Amnplify your experience. That is what we want you to do here, and if you want to let me know why you do, or don’t, shoot me a message on Facebook.
Hope you enjoy yourself here and find something that hits you somewhere.
